When an RPG is good, it lasts forever in your mind. Those stories and exciting gameplay mix together for unforgettable experiences. Of course, that only happens when both of those elements align and you’re truly sucked in to some unique stories and gameplay. Revisiting these games will give you that nostalgic feeling while also allowing you to appreciate elements you may not have noticed the first time around.
Whether you want to see what else you can do while immersed in these worlds, or you’re more interested in exploring new avenues you missed the first time around, these games are all RPGs you can jump into that have only improved with time.
10 Stardew Valley
Every day is different in Stardew Valley, and that’s really just dependent on what you make of it. While you could just keep playing for as long as you want, leaving the farm and returning later gives you a chance to appreciate what you have and try a brand new adventure the next time around.
Of course, updates make the game better with time, providing even more opportunities to a game that already has a ton of options available to you. Farming isn’t the only thing you can do here, and the more you play and the more you return, the more you uncover and the better the game gets.
9 Fallout 3
The huge ambition of Fallout 3 can truly be appreciated on a revisit. It’s one of those games where you can explore as you want and get immersed in its world, while also enjoying a story that starts with tragedy and leads to some moments you just can’t replicate.
Replayability is high here, and though that first moment of walking out of the vault can never be replicated, the exploration, gameplay, and experience of this post-apocalyptic world will only get better and more immersive with each return.
8 Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger was easily ahead of its time, making revisiting it now just a trip well worth taking. It may seem like an outdated option, but it’s well worth taking up the mantle of Chrono Trigger again to experience the story, ATB system, and relive what makes this game a classic.
As time goes on, Chrono Trigger continues to prove to be the standard for turn-based RPGs, with games still referencing this masterpiece. Characters and worldbuilding don’t take a hit years later, and even the visuals still fit the mood. Turn-based players will love to revisit Chrono Trigger years later, as it just proves why it’s such a classic even today.
7 Final Fantasy 10
There are stories that are just as impactful the second time around, despite the story unfolding in exactly the same way. The same can be said for playing it the 45th time around. Final Fantasy 10 is just a perfect RPG, that gets better with age. The more you play, the more challenges you can take on, and the more random experiences you can encounter.
The Sphere Grid is the perfect way to customize your party members and will give you the opportunity to try out tons of different ways to play them. The minigames are a delight, and Blitzball could be an entire game on its own, worth revisiting.
6 Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
Arguably the best Star Wars story and best Star Wars game, Knights of the Old Republic is a trip into what a true storytelling experience is in an RPG. Years after its launch, this title still holds up with several paths to try and revisit even today. A master class in storytelling, KOTOR is famous for its dialogue choices and gaming experience. It’s never a bad time to relive the magic here.
Some will say it’s a bit overrated, and it’s definitely clunky all these years later, but it’s still worth revisiting despite all of those issues, as mods can help with most issues, but coming back proves just how good the game still is. Gorgeous locales really immerse fans in the world of Star Wars.
5 Divinity: Original Sin 2
This is a game that you’ll easily come back to over and over. A chance to roleplay as you see fit, combined with a great cast, fun turn-based tactical gameplay, and a feeling you can’t quite describe, creates a unique experience in video game history. Choosing the right branching path is one thing, but as tim goes, returning to Divnity: Original Sin 2 presents so many new secrets even after all this time.
The game can already take hundresds of hours of your time to complete, so going back to it to discover new things on each playthrough including side missions you missed or new paths you didn’t take years ago, allows you to once again join this eccletcic cast of adventures in one of the best RPGs ever made.
4 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Another game with an in-depth story, great gameplay, and a world well worth revisiting. The classic characters and the dark yet beautiful land to explore create a world even better on a revisit. The game presents fantasy at its finest, with an immersion and an even better experience with the DLC and patches on later consoles, making it worth revisiting just to see it in a new light, regardless of the pull to play it again.
With Gwent taking up enough of your time as well in its own right, The Witcher 3 can only truly be appreciated after you’ve immersed yourself in the world and brought Geralt’s story full circle multiple times, and going back will only make it better.
3 Red Dead Redemption 2
It’s difficult to find anything negative to say about Red Dead Redemption 2, which is a testament to just how good of an RPG it is. As time goes on, there’s not a game that’s as good as this one in what it makes you feel as a player.
The freedom and atmosphere are easy to sink into, and as time goes by, sometimes you just want to saddle your horse and explore the world. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of doing just that in Red Dead 2. Being able to do just that as more time goes by proves the staying power of this unique title.
2 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
There’s a reason Skyrim has been ported everywhere as a testament to just how good the game is. Mods can keep a game alive for a long time, and the things you can do in Elder Scrolls this long after its launch are an easy reason why you’ll want to continually return.
With every new console the game is released on, there’s a fresh experience for this staple RPG. Topping favorite game of all time lists, it’s a classic, large and compelling world to get lost in.
1 Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 literally gets better with age. As a game that has countless possibilities, there’s always something new to uncover. With several different ways to play the game, BG3 continues to be a classic fallback for titles that are well worth revisiting. Since launch, the game has seen 12 additional subclasses added, all for free.
Revisiting the game means making new decisions, playing with a different angle, trying out the additional free DLC, and more. An evil playthrough, recruiting no one, killing a party member, there’s so much that every time you return to the game, it gets better and better, and even more so when you play it co-op.
