11 Years Later, This Steamy Historical Fantasy Show Based on a Bestselling Book Series Is Quietly Crushing the Streaming Charts

Starz’s steamy historical romance series Outlander is steadily becoming a streaming hit eleven years after its original release. The series remains ongoing with a new season and prequel story already confirmed.

Per FlixPatrol and as of July 5, Outlander holds the #4 spot on the Starz Top 10 chart. The show has consistently been performing well on the streamer, with it being within the Top 5 the entire week of June 29–July 5. Outlander is based on Diana Galadon’s book series of the same name and tells the story of an English former World War II military nurse in Scotland who finds herself transported from 1945 back to 1743, where she falls in love with a Highland warrior and becomes entangled in the Jacobite rising.

The first season of Outlander premiered in August 2014 and was based on the first novel in Gabaldon’s series. Caitríona Balfe stars as the nurse Claire Randall, with Sam Heughan opposite as her love interest, James «Jamie» Fraser. To date, Outlander has aired seven seasons and 91 episodes, with the most recent season concluding in January 2025.

With its mixture of romance, science fiction and history, Outlander tells an epic tale that’s often been praised for its strong performances, particularly by Balfe and Heughan. The show’s ability to blend historical elements with the lives of its fictional characters is also something fans have loved over the years, with the real-world Jacobite rising keeping the show rooted in historical events — despite Outlander still being able to take several creative liberties for its storytelling purposes.

Over the years, Outlander has consistently been a hit for Starz, maintaining strong viewership and receiving widespread critical acclaim with each new season. On Rotten Tomatoes, the entire series has a Tomatometer of 90%, with all seven seasons being rated fresh, and the audience score is similarly high at 86%. Outlander‘s continued success over the years led to it receiving an early renewal back in 2023, with an eighth and final season ordered before Season 7 premiered. Production for the final season has already wrapped.

An Outlander Prequel Arrives Next Month

Back in February 2022, development began on an Outlander prequel series, and over three years later, the wait is almost over. Titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood, the new series will focus on Jamie and Claire’s parents, with the story spanning 18th century Scotland and World War I in England. Harriet Slater (Pennyworth) and Jamie Roy star as Jamie Frasers parents, with Claire’s parents being played by Hermione Corfield (Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation) and Jeremy Irvine (Great Expectations).

The first season of Blood of My Blood is confirmed to be ten episodes long, with the premiere scheduled for Aug. 8 on Starz. The eighth and final season of the main Outlander show has also been confirmed to run for ten episodes, but a release date has not been announced at this time.

All seven seasons of Outlander are now streaming on Starz.
