A cosmetic enhancement scandal hit camel beauty contests in Oman after 20 camels were disqualified at the 2026 Camel Beauty Show Festival in Al Musanaa following veterinary inspections.
Organizers said the animals were removed from competition after inspectors found evidence of cosmetic procedures, including Botox, dermal fillers, silicone, and hormone treatments. The event, overseen by the Camel Club and the Oman Camel Racing Federation, is one of the region’s major showcases for prized camel breeding and pageantry.
Officials said the disqualifications were part of ongoing efforts to protect the integrity of the competition.
In a statement, organizers said they were committed to stopping “all acts of tampering and deception in the beautification of camels,” adding that strict penalties would be enforced against rule breakers.
Beauty contest ravaged by cosmetically enhanced camels
Camel beauty contests focus on four main judging categories: coat, neck, head, and hump. Judges look for shiny, well-defined coats, long and wide necks, large heads with pendulous lips and dark eyelashes, and a well-shaped hump with strong posture.
Veterinary inspectors said the disqualified camels had undergone cosmetic alterations aimed at enhancing those exact traits. Reported procedures included hyaluronic acid injections to enlarge lips, silicone and fillers to reshape noses, Botox to soften facial features, silicone wax to alter hump appearance, and hormone use intended to improve muscular definition.
The contests carry major financial and reputational stakes across the Gulf region, where winning camels can bring significant breeding value, prestige, and cash prizes.

The disqualifications in Oman follow similar incidents at major regional events in recent years. At Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz Camel Festival in 2018, several camels were disqualified after inspectors found evidence of fillers and botulinum toxin use.

In 2021, more than 40 camels were removed from the same festival after officials uncovered a wider range of enhancement methods, including hormone treatments and artificial inflation techniques.
Prize pools at major camel festivals can reach tens of millions of dollars, making the contests highly competitive and increasing pressure on breeders to produce ideal-looking animals.
Camel beauty competitions are widely viewed as cultural showcases tied to Bedouin heritage, with animals judged not only for appearance but also for lineage and breeding value. Top-performing camels often become highly valuable assets for owners and breeders.
Veterinary experts have warned that cosmetic substances used in camels can cause serious health risks. Reported complications include infections, swelling, tissue damage, and chronic inflammation, especially when procedures are performed without proper medical oversight.
Botox use can interfere with facial muscles needed for eating and drinking, while fillers and silicone may migrate or cause long-term inflammation. Hormonal treatments can disrupt natural physiology, potentially leading to infertility, behavioral changes, and endocrine issues.
The disqualified camels were removed from judging and returned to their owners, as organizers reiterated that only natural features will be accepted in future competitions.
This is just the latest animal story to go viral across social media. Back in February, a cat was banned from a school’s campus after spending months wandering into classrooms, setting off alarms in the process.
