A dog that is at least 30 years old, and could be a Guinness World Record holder, has been rescued in France after its previous owner died.

The average lifespan for most dogs is around the age of 12. So, getting a furry sidekick that lives beyond that is a blessing, especially if you’ve had them since birth. Some smaller dogs will generally live well beyond that average 12-year lifespan, with many hitting 14 and 15 before passing away.

Over in France, however, there have been reports of a continental toy spaniel called Lazare being at least 30 years old.

As per The Times, the tiny dog was placed into the care of the Société Protectrice des Animaux (The Spa) after his previous owner had passed away.

Lazare the dog could be a Guinness World Record holder

Lazare, whos name translates to God aids, is arthritic, visually impaired, slightly deaf, and has a condition that makes his tongue flop out of his mouth.

However, he found a new home with Ophélie Boudol after spending 10 days at the Annecy Marlio Spa animal welfare refuge in the French Alps. She has since been updating Instagram on Lazare’s progress too.

According to the Spa, Lazare’s age was also checked while he was in the care of the shelter. “We have done a double check. There can be no doubt. Lazare is in his 31st year,” Anne-Sophie Moyon, the head of the refuge, said.

Lazare’s new owner is “not interested” in the record, and rescued him because they had an “instant bond” upon meeting.

The Spa wants Guinness World Records to investigate the dog’s age so that he can potentially take the record from the previous holder, Bluey.

Bluey was an Australian cattle dog that lived to the age of 29 and died in 1939, and has been the record holder for quite some time.

Lazare isn’t the only dog going viral either. At the end of April, Ellbie the Jack Russell, escaped from her owner’s apartment in Australia and spent two days stuck on a ledge before being rescued by abseiling firemen.
