28 Years Later star Jodie Comer is opening up about one of her biggest Hollywood roles in a surprising way. The English actor reveals she regrets starring in Ryan Reynolds’ hit action comedy Free Guy for one reason.
Speaking with The Independent, Comer recalled her time on Free Guy — which was her first significant role in a Hollywood movie after making a cameo in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Though she enjoyed her time on the critically acclaimed film, the Help actor claimed she got little professional fulfillment or emotional connection from the movie.
“It was my first film and I had the most amazing experience on that job — they were just the most gentle, inclusive, supportive people, and it was incredibly fun,” she said. “But I realised when I was coming home, ‘Ah, there’s something I’m not feeling. I feel like I’m not stretching. Or not discovering.’ And I realised that it was the emotional part of it. I wasn’t exercising [that] part of myself.”
«It was the emotional part of it. I wasn’t exercising [that] part of myself.»
Comer also expressed her desire to never put herself into a similar situation against, only wanting roles that leave her feeling emotionally connected. “I realised that’s actually where I get my fulfilment — trying to find those places,” she continued. “If the instincts aren’t there, if I’m not excited by it, then I just don’t want to go near it because then I’m pulling from an artificial place. It feels almost dishonest with myself.”
Free Guy Is One of Ryan Reynolds' Most Popular Movies
While Comer likely won’t be rewatching Free Guy any time soon, the film remains a must-watch for movie lovers years later. Reynolds stars as a bank teller who discovers he’s a non-player character (NPC) in a game called Free City. Comer portrays Millie Rusk, a software designer looking inside Free City for proof that the source code was stolen from her original game. Guy falls for Millie’s online avatar «MolotovGirl» and the two partner up to unravel the game’s secrets.
Directed by Deadpool & Wolverine helmer Shawn Levy, Free Guy is one of Reynolds’ highest-grossing efforts, earning $331.5 million worldwide against its $125 million budget. The 20th Century Studios film also has an 80% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes and garnered several accolades, including an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects, a Saturn Award nod for Comer and an MTV Movie & TV Awards win for Reynolds. Though a sequel had been planned for some time, Levy offered a disappointing update on its progress in July 2024.
Comer stars in 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle’s follow-up to the acclaimed 28 Days Later and the first film in an intended trilogy chronicling the fallout from the deadly Rage Virus. The post-apocalyptic horror sequel sees Comer portray a woman suffering memory loss, trying to survive along with her husband (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and son. Also starring Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell, 28 Years Later has been received positively in its early screenings.
28 Years Later premieres June 20, 2025. Free Guy is streaming on Disney+.
