DC Comics has been around for over eighty years, and in that time, they’ve introduced countless heroes and villains. Naturally, not every hero can get the same spotlight as Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman. Still, there are plenty of characters fans would love to see receive more attention, many of whom deserve a solo series of their own.
The heroes of DC Comics come in all shapes and sizes, from teenage prodigies with limitless potential to ancient guardians who’ve watched over the world for centuries. Characters like Adam Strange and Stephanie Brown show that DC has something for everyone, and that’s why it’s time to let some of these lesser-known heroes step into the spotlight.
8 Adam Strange Is An Archaeologist Turned Superhero
Adam Strange Has Been a Part of the DC Universe Since the 1950s
«This is Adam Strange. I need to report a missing planet. The Earth. Terra. E-A-R…»
Adam Strange was once an ordinary archaeologist, but while he was happily working away on a dig site, he was suddenly transported to another galaxy. While this gave him a chance to visit Rann, one of DC Comics’ most underrated alien planets, it was far from an ideal situation. Strange had been summoned by people who were desperate for help from any intelligent life.
While this didn’t grant Adam Strange superpowers in the traditional sense, he eventually gained access to a jet-propulsion spacesuit and light-energy weaponry. He also has cloned eyes, which allow him to see the entire electromagnetic system. Contrary to popular belief, Strange Adventures was not named after him, but rather the other way around.
7 Red Tornado Is an Android Who Overcame His Programming
He's Served as a Mentor to Superhero Teams Like Young Justice
«Make me human! If humanity is to perish, let me go with them! Send me to oblivion with those I love, as one of them!»
The Red Tornado is an android created by Professor T.O. Morrow that was originally designed to sow chaos and discord. Luckily, things didn’t go quite the way the Professor planned. The android merged with an entity called the Tornado Champion, which set Red Tornado on the path towards heroism.
Since then, Red Tornado has had the opportunity to be part of major superhero teams, such as the Justice League, and has served as a mentor to young heroes in Young Justice. He’s set to lead a team in the upcoming book Justice League Red, but it would be great to see him step into the spotlight and get a comic that’s all his own.
6 Vixen Has Appeared in the Arrowverse and Deserves a Solo Book
Mari Jiwe McCabe Is Deeply Connected to the Red
«We can stop them from killing us. How do we stop them from hating us?»
Mari Jiwe McCabe hails from Zambesi, and she has created a unique path for herself in DC Comics. More commonly known as Vixen, she has forged a connection to The Red through her Tantu Totem. Since her introduction, she has worked with many superhero teams, including the Justice League of America, and later joined the newer take on the JLA introduced in Rebirth.
Vixen is a powerful character who’s starred in her own miniseries and could easily carry a solo book. She has the blood of Anansi within her veins, and thanks to other Tantu Totem, she can mimic any animal she so desires. Without her Totem, she is much more limited in what her powers can handle. She likewise has many other abilities, from density control to flight and superhuman agility.
5 Detective Chimp Is a Hyper-Intelligent Detective
Detective Chimp Serves As a Protector of Myrra
«Just a Chimp with a magic sword, Lady. But you can count on me.»
Bobo T. Chimpanzee, better known as Detective Chimp, has been around for decades, but has yet to receive the attention he deserves. He’s an incredibly intelligent detective who has gone through a lot over the years, not dissimilar to the stories of Sherlock Holmes. More recently, Detective Chimp played a role in the events of Justice League Dark and Dark Nights: Metal, where he inherited a sword and became the protector of Myrra.
One of the best reasons to give Detective Chimp a solo series is that the character would work well in a wide range of genres. His new abilities make him a terrific fit for a fantasy book, and of course, he could always star in a mystery series. Giving Detective Chimp a solo series would be a fantastic way to add more variety to the DC Comics lineup,
4 Big Barda Is One of the Strongest DC Comics Characters
She's an Apokoliptian Soldier Who Became a Hero
«This is it. The last memory you’ll get of the world that loved you. Red lights. Endless. At least it’s pretty. It’s almost pretty.»
Big Barda is one of the few DC Comics characters powerful enough to rule the universe. She also has a fairly complicated history, as she was once an Apokoliptian soldier and a proud member of the Female Furies, which put her at the beck and call of Darkseid. However, that changed after she met and fell in love with Scott Free, the adopted son of Darkseid.
No one should underestimate Big Barda, as she has superhuman strength, reflexes, and stamina, along with a host of other abilities. She’s also immortal, so there’s no use outwaiting her. Big Barda is undeniably a powerhouse, but her backstory gives her real depth, and it would be great to explore more of it in a new solo title.
3 Jaime Reyes Had a Great Blue Beetle Solo Book
It's Time to Bring This Blue Beetle Back Into the Spotlight
«And you, fake bugsuit: you think I can’t finish what I start? Have fun trying to conquer the world on the back of a high school dropout!»
Legacy heroes are a big part of DC Comics, and Jaime Reyes is one of the best. He took on the mantle after he fused with a mystical scarab, and he proved to be a capable hero. Since then, Jaime has starred in his own solo series and been a part of several teams, including the Teen Titans and the Secret Six.
Jaime’s original solo book, which debuted in 2006, was a standout, and many readers would love to see him make a comeback. One of the best things about his title was his strong supporting cast. He’s a character who has the potential to be DC’s answer to Spider-Man if he’s given another chance.
2 Static Is a Teenage Superhero With Electromagnetic Powers
He Once Starred in the Static Shock Cartoon
«We put a shock to the system.»
Fans cannot get enough of teenage superheroes, and thus, DC Comics will continue to make them. Enter Virgil Hawkins, better known as Static. Static is a young superhero trying to find that perfect balance between having a social life, going to school, and saving the day. It’s easier said than done. It all started when he was exposed to an experimental chemical.
Since this is the world of superheroes, the chemical didn’t kill Virgil, but instead gave him access to electromagnetic powers. He dubbed himself Static and had since dedicated himself to a life of fighting crime. Static can generate raw electrical energy, create electric force fields, and even form static saucers. He can likewise magnetize various surfaces, again thanks to his electrical powers.
1 Stephanie Brown Deserves a New Batgirl Book
She's a Proud Member of the Bat Family
«I’m not going to let you get away with this, dad. I know your plans, and I’m going to do everything I can to spoil them.»
Stephanie Brown is the daughter of the infamous Cluemaster. She spent much of her childhood hoping that her father would make the right choice in life, but he always let her down. She finally had enough and rose up to stop his latest nefarious plan, taking on the mantle of Spoiler. While the stress of superheroics led Stephanie to fake her own death, she returned and became Batgirl.
DC Comics has many characters who have held the mantle of Batgirl, but Stephanie has proved to be a fan favorite. She has overcome great odds and proved to be a capable member of the Bat-Family. While there have been a few Stephanie-centric arcs over the years, fans can’t get enough of her and would love to see her get a new solo series.
