Magic: The Gathering, a popular trading card game first released in 1993, may be joining Hasbro’s potential cinematic universe following a recent update on the upcoming Voltron movie.

After the company announced a new licensing collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios, they also teased further expansion of franchises, which means other toy properties can have the same opportunity.

Tim Kilpin, President of Toy, Licensing, and Entertainment at Hasbro, said in an official statement:

Voltron’s long and rich history strategically aligns with our portfolio of iconic 80s brands. Our collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios will further strengthen the franchise’s longevity and unlock new opportunities to engage both longtime fans and new audiences alike.

The possibility of getting a Magic: The Gathering screen adaptation isn’t fresh news at all. 20th Century Fox acquired the rights to produce a film in 2014 after Universal Pictures dropped the project.

Apparently, Hasbro and Universal had been attempting to develop the movie since 2009. Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019, the planned film was unfortunately cancelled.

Great news arrived in 2025 after Hasbro and Legendary Entertainment confirmed via Variety that the famed trading card game is set for film and TV adaptations.

Mary Parent, Legendary’s head of worldwide production, said both teams are thrilled to work together to create a multimedia universe that would satisfy longtime fans and attract new ones.

Legendary has proved to be a great production partner when it comes to Monsterverse, and it’s easy to see why Hasbro agreed to a collaboration.

Following Matt Johnson’s confirmation as director, he’s now giving fans a major update on the project. Speaking with MovieWeb, he said:

I’m still in the middle of it, that’s very much happening. It’s the biggest project I’ve ever been a part of in my life and I’m amazed it’s happening. As of today, as of this conversation, it’s very much full speed ahead.

Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have been tapped to write the script, and with Johnson’s recent statement, fans are assured that everyone is still on board.

While Henry Cavill’s projects after his stint as Superman had been hit or miss, his work on Voltron might be what he needs to bring him back to the top. On the other hand, the actor’s star power will certainly help draw attention to the project.

If Voltron emerges as a commercial success, this will pave the way for Hasbro to produce more content and, at the same time, slowly build its own cinematic universe. It’s highly possible that this will have some influence on the progress of the Magic: The Gathering movie, which many fans are surely looking forward to.
