A Minecraft Movie continues to make the box office its sandbox as the recently-released blockbuster is now the highest-grossing film coming out of Hollywood. The sandbox video game adaptation secures its place in Warner Bros. history following its second weekend in cinemas.
Per Collider, A Minecraft Movie is now among the top 25 most commercially successful Warner Bros. films, slotting in at number 24 at the all-time domestic box office ($280 million), ahead of The Hangover. Though A Minecraft Movie, the second-highest-grossing film released in 2025 ($550.6 million worldwide), has a long way to go to catch Barbie ($1.447 billion worldwide) at the top of Warner Bros.’ all-time list, the live-action adaptation earned a higher domestic opening weekend return than the Oscar-winning effort.
A Minecraft Movie has surpassed all box office expectations for Warner Bros., building on the best opening by any North American film this year. Thanks to a strong second weekend, it placed second on the global box office chart, behind the Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2. The film, now one of the five biggest-earning video game adaptations, was a much-needed boost for Warner Bros., who reportedly face major leadership decisions amid several recent big-screen flops, including Joker: Folie à Deux and Mickey 17.
Directed by Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie puts a live-action spin on the popular sandbox game developed by the Swedish-based Mojang Studios. A Minecraft Movie stars Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers and Jack Black, who is no stranger to well-performing video game adaptations, having starred in the highest-grossing one in history, A Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film chronicles four misfits pulled through a portal into a cubic world thriving with imagination, including video game store owner Garrett «The Garbage Man» Garrison (Momoa), left with no choice but to master that world while going on a quest with expert crafter and doorknob salesman Steve (Black).
Critics are divided about The Minecraft Movie, which has a 47% Rotten Tomatoes rating amid questions about its faithfulness to the source material and visuals. However, the film’s 87% audience score on the review aggregator’s Popcornmeter mirrors the excitement fans of the video game have towards it, though some movie lovers have gone overboard thanks to the chicken jockey TikTok trend.
A Minecraft Movie 2 Is Planned
Hess and Warner Bros. executives have all but confirmed there will be a sequel to A Minecraft Movie. Hess alluded to the introduction of an important character at the end of the film and fan demand as reasons he’s likely to make a follow-up.
A Minecraft Movie is now showing in theaters across North America.
