I want my physical games, bub

Insomniac’s highly anticipated Marvel’s Wolverine has finally resurfaced with a stunning new trailer playing ahead of the theatrical release of The Odyssey. But while the claws-out action should have caused pure hype, PlayStation fans are instead laying into and, quite frankly, obliterating the teaser over a controversial decision by Sony to end physical discs beginning in 2028.
The cinematic trailer delivers everything fans wanted: brutal combat, Logan’s iconic grit, and a gorgeous look at Madripoor. However, it didn’t matter. On X, YouTube, anywhere the trailer is posted, Sony’s most diehard fanbase is showing up to throw more shade at them than that arrow scene from 300 at the choice to kill physical media. Comment sections and social media quickly filled with sarcasm and hate. Don’t believe us, here is just a small sample size of some of the stuff they were on about.
“I’ll get this PHYSICAL”
“This game will fit perfectly in my PHYSICAL game collection”
“Why did Insomniac explicitly say that it will come on disc? Could it be that you are lying about consumer preference? Could it be that more people care than you let on? Could it be that you blindsided your own studios with your room temperature IQ decision to kill physical media?”
As previously reported by , the backlash since the controversial decision has been fierce. Nobody likes this, and what it means for the future of the gaming scene as a whole. Even worse was Sony’s nonchalant response, reminiscent of the ego they had prior to the PlayStation 3’s launch.
Whether this ends anytime soon or not, one thing is for sure: I feel bad for any third-party studios looking to advertise on PlayStation’s social media channels, given how much anger is coming their way. As with everybody else, the trailer will be playing before Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in select theaters this weekend.
