While fans had already figured out that the first release of Absolute Batman 20’s solicited cover was redacted, few may have prepared themselves for what was behind that redaction. And now, more than a month before the issue’s final release, we got the unredacted solicitation of #20, which gave us our first look at Absolute Robin, or more accurately, Absolute Robins (via League of Comic Geeks).
With individuals on motorcycles and giant, hulking mechs standing in front of the Caped Crusader on the cover, most fans didn’t expect such a crazy and exciting reveal by DC this soon. Thus, while Absolute Batman #19 was stated to be a big deal in the Absolute Universe, the cover of issue #20 seems to have snatched the spotlight until #19’s release.
Absolute Batman #20 Cover Confirms Fan Theory About Absolute Robin

As stated above, while there may not have been many, fans did theorize since the release of Absolute Batman 19’s variant cover by Nick Dragotta that instead of one single entity, perhaps Absolute Robin is an idea, a concept, or an initiative.
Moreover, looking at Absolute Joker wearing the ‘R’ symbol on his coat jacket on the cover art was another indication that this time, Robin will be something that’ll oppose the Caped Crusader instead of being an ally. And with issue #20 showing us giant mechs with the same symbol confirms that fact that Absolute Robin is a manufactured machination of Jack Grimm.
This also ties back to the hidden detail about Absolute Joker that Scott Snyder recently reposted on his X, and upon closer inspection, outlines the true intentions of using the system of Gotham City to destroy its own protector, all while maintaining his image as the benevolent philanthropist. This way, he wouldn’t need to get his demonic hands dirty while slowly poisoning the life of Bruce Wayne, Batman, and Gotham.
Thus, whatever we thought we could expect from Absolute Robin in the upcoming issue has become even crazier and definitely more exciting than before.

While DC Comics may have generated tremendous hype around issue #20, with fans also enjoying and discussing this unexpected reveal, many also feel like this unredaction has spoiled the mystique that surrounded Absolute Robin too early.
This is a sentiment that writer Scott Snyder shares with the fans as well, which is why on his X (@Ssnyder1835), he revealed the decision behind the solicitation. According to him, this was a business decision rather than a creative one, as the retailers to receive pre-orders, DC had to give them the full unredacted version of the main cover.
Just a heads up. To give retailers enough time to allow people to order issue 20 before FOC 2 weeks from today, we’re going to reveal the cover to 20 this Wednesday.
It’s not ideal as the cover shows our concept of Robin, but we don’t want to hamstring retailers either. pic.twitter.com/Fr1XfonsNT

On the positive side, it helped the readers make up their mind about getting a copy of issue #20 without being in the dark. Therefore, while it may have taken away from the surprise element, DC Comics and the creative team believed that this was the best possible way the business side of things could have been handled.
