Stranger Things is one of Netflix’s biggest shows to date. The original series, which comes from Matt and Ross Duffer, features David Harbour as the gruff-yet-lovable Jim Hopper.

The sci-fi show premiered in 2016 and will conclude Season 5, releasing in late 2025.. Stranger Things featured an ensemble cast with both young and adult actors, who worked together for a decade. In a new interview conducted by Scarlett Johansson, Harbour, who has played Hopper since the show’s premiere, revealed his frustrations after so many years with the show via Interview Magazine.

Asked whether finishing up Stranger Things was a relief, the actor explained that he loved doing the show at the beginning, and never imagined he’d ever get tired of the role. However, after many years on the show, the actor admitted he wanted other challenges.

«When I started I loved it so much,» he recalled. «Buddies of mine who’d done TV shows for many years said, ‘By Season three or four you’ll be running.’ And I was like, ‘Never! I love all these guys so much.’» The Thunderbolts* actor continued, «And then you get to a certain point where you’re like, ‘How much more story is there? You’re having to play a lot of the same beat, and there’s a feeling where you’re like, ‘I want to take a risk. I want to do something that people haven’t seen me do before.’ So yeah, after 10 years, it’s like, ‘Okay.’ «

Johansson, with whom he co-starred in 2021’s Black Widow, also shared her experience working on Marvel films for 10 years, where she explains that, sometimes, their roles are not as big but they serve the story. Because of their importance to the big picture, they are restrained from taking vastly different roles or making big changes. «These sound like silly problems, but your identity is wrapped up in this job for a long time, and if you’re not doing engaging work as an actor, you feel a little cagey sometimes,» Johansson explained.

«It’s the same thing with this show,» Harbour admitted about Stranger Things. «There’d be certain seasons where you feel like, ‘I’m going to go in this different direction.’ But as you say, a piece of your psyche is occupied with this group of people and this storyline. I don’t paint my nails, but I get that idea of ‘I can’t get a haircut’ or “I can’t shave this freaking mustache.’ «

David Harbour's Hopper Will Be Back in Stranger Things Season 5

Hopper is one of the main characters of the ensemble cast. He was the Chief of Police, and had an important part in Eleven’s development, as he eventually took her in as an adoptive daughter. Over the seasons, he also got involved with Joyce.

In Season 4, Hopper was captured by the Russians and imprisoned. He managed to send Joyce a message, and eventually escaped. During his stay at the prison, he also fought several Demogorgons. Eventually, he managed to escape with Joyce and Murray, and was reunited with Eleven at the cabin. Harbour will return as Jim Hopper, and teased that the season finale «definitely be satisfying.»

Stranger Things Season 5 premieres on Nov. 26 for Volume 1, with Volume 2 following shortly on Christmas, and the finale released on New Year’s Eve.
