Amazon takes over James Bond video games following 007 First Light’s success

IO Interactive

Amazon have confirmed that they’ll publish any future Bond games, including a sequel to the hugely successful 007 First Light. This has fans worried that developers IO Interactive will no longer be involved.

Not only did the latest Bond game sell 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, but it also received glowing reviews (check out ours, where we called it “everything a Bond game should be”).

The game’s ending confirmed a sequel, but now that Amazon own the rights to all things Bond, including the video games, they’re going to be handling the franchise moving forward.

First Light’s developers, IO Interactive, self-published the game, but that will no longer be the case. In an interview with Polygon, Amazon’s GM of gaming, Jeff Gattis, confirmed they’ll take charge.

Gattis said that while they “didn’t have the full rights to this First Light James Bond game,” any sequels will be “done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios.”

“We did not [make First Light],” explained Gattis. “We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP, but that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done.”

Bond fans hope IO Interactive stay on as 007 devs

The interview didn’t mention IO Interactive’s future, so fans are worried this means they won’t develop a First Light sequel — or at least lose creative control.

“Successful game comes out, they take it away from the studio who built it. Of course,” speculated a top comment in a Reddit thread.

“I hope they realize that IO Interactive has it figured out, and they let them keep doing what they’re doing, but I’m not gonna hold my breath,” said another on X (formerly Twitter).

“Imagine IOI pulling out a banger 007 game after decades only to not use them later,” chimed in YouTuber DANNYonPC.

However, Amazon taking charge of the franchise and handling publishing doesn’t mean that IO can’t develop the sequel. Amazon Game Studios are also publishing the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, but Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are developing it.

It does mean that Amazon have more creative control, but it’s unclear how big their involvement in the development will be.
