American Truck Simulator is adding driveable cars with its new Road Trip mode

Ever wanted to play American Truck Simulator without trucks? That might seem like a ridiculous question, after all, ‘truck’ is in the title of the game. But for us, the answer is, surprisingly, yes. And now, American Truck Simulator is set to deliver that experience with a new Road Trip mode that adds cars to the game.

It’s early days, but developer SCS has announced that it’s working on Road Trip for American Truck Simulator, which “..should allow players to enjoy the vast landscapes of ATS not only from the cab of an 18-wheeler but also from behind the wheel of, say, a powerful pickup or even a sports car.”

Why? SCS explains that it hopes “…this new perspective will appeal not only to long-time players but also to those who may be discovering the world of ATS for the first time.” We’re absolutely on board with this too, American Truck Simulator is absolutely massive and while trucking around is fun, there have absolutely been times we’ve wanted to just explore the world in a less unwieldy vehicle.

There are, in fact, already mods for American Truck Simulator which add in cars, and they’re an awful lot of fun. The handling still feels faintly off, possibly because the game is expecting a truck, but it’s still a joy to drive around in one. American Truck Simulator, coupled with its various DLC packs, recreates big chunks of America, and while we wouldn’t guarantee their accuracy, there’s plenty of potential for chilled-out drives.

SCS has also shared a deeper dive into the concept in a developer video which you can watch here. The developer has emphasised that a separate team is working on Road Trip, and that it won’t take away from the development of the main game. That was a smart move on their part, since a portion of comments are grumbling about how SCS should be bug fixing instead.

The developer is expecting an “avalanche of feedback”, on Road Trip, so don’t count on seeing it just yet. In the meantime, if you’ve not tried American Truck Simulator, it’s an absolute steal at £4.22 on Steam, 75% off its regular price.
