With Ballerina tip-toeing its way to early success, star Ana de Armas sees a much less-heralded movie find redemption like her character does in the John Wick spinoff. The panned de Armas-led romantic action comedy, Ghosted, also starring Marvel Cinematic Universe legend Chris Evans, becomes a streaming hit years after its release.

Per Collider, Ghosted, an Apple TV+ original film, is back on the streaming service’s charts after its initial 2023 debut. Ghosted ranks #6 on Apple TV+’s top 10 movies chart, topped by Guy Ritchie’s latest feature-length project, Fountain of Youth.

What Is Ghosted About?

Directed by Rocketman helmer and Bohemian Rhapsody producer Dexter Fletcher, Ghosted chronicles Sadie Rhodes (de Armas), a seemingly lonely woman who meets a romantically needy vendor, Cole Turner (Evans), leading to an enjoyable and intimate first night together. When Cole receives no answer from Sadie the next day after texting her, feeling like she ghosted him, he is captured in London and taken to Pakistan by arms dealers who believe he is a CIA operative. However, Sadie appears to save Cole, confirming that she’s really the operative in question. After Cole discovers Sadie’s double life as a secret agent, they argue whether they should go on a second date. However, before their romantic future can be decided, they are swept away on a world-saving adventure.

Ghosted boasts a star-studded cast that also includes two-time Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody, who portrays disgraced French intelligence agent Leveque, plus a slew of Marvel stars in Captain America: Brave New World‘s Anthony Mackie and Tim Blake Nelson, plus Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Ryan Reynolds. Despite the big names, Ghosted fell flat with critics, earning a 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving three Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including Worst Actress for de Armas and Worst Actor for Evans. Despite being panned, Ghosted set an Apple TV+ record for being the streamer’s most-watched film debut.

Thankfully for de Armas, Ballerina has been receiving much more positive feedback. The film has a 76% critical rating and a John Wick franchise-best audience 93% audience score since its Jun. 6 release. Set between the last two John Wick sequels, Chapter 3 — Parabellum and Chapter 4, Ballerina sees de Armas portray Eve Macarro, an assassin training at the Ruska Roma organization, which operates under the guise of a ballet school. While at Ruska Roma, Eve perfects her assassin skillset as she seeks vengeance against those responsible for her father’s murder. Eve also crosses paths with Keanu Reeves’ Wick, who is initially sent to kill her but helps her in her quest for revenge.

Director Len Wiseman recently hinted at a potential Ballerina sequel, with De Armas’ character set on a new mission. De Armas has also expressed interest in a potential John Wick 5 appearance.

Ghosted is now streaming on Apple TV+. Meanwhile, Ballerina is now showing in theaters across North America.
