An MCU Icon is Caught in the Middle of the X-Men’s Most Infamous Saga

The following contains major spoilers for «Marvel Girl» from the pages of Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1, on sale June 11 from Marvel Comics.

Kamala Khan has just landed herself in the middle of the darkest saga the X-Men have ever lived through.

«Marvel Girl» (by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly and Rod Reis, from the pages of Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1) picks up right where the previous chapter of this time-spanning journey began, with Kamala Khan huddled in and watching on from the bushes outside the Xavier Institute. Not only has Kamala been rocketed back decades from her relative present, she has no way of her own to get back home. And, if that weren’t bad enough, the villain who left her here isn’t even her biggest problem, at least not while the Dark Phoenix looms directly overhead.

Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga follows hot on the heels of the events of last month’s Giant-Size X-Men #1. In the title’s opening story, Kamala and her longtime friend and occasional romantic interest Bruno Carrelli’s twilight rendezvous was interrupted by a sudden rip in time that sent the two hurtling through the ages. In Kamala’s case, that meant landing in the middle of the X-Men’s front lawn years in the past, where she was greeted by the sight of a grievously mourning Cyclops.

As it turned out, this entire situation was caused by an elderly David Haller, better known as Legion, whose grand scheme somehow involves key moments in the X-Men’s history. When the Legion of the primary Marvel Universe was first introduced in the pages of 1984’s New Mutants #26 by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, he was under the care of his mother, Doctor Moira MacTaggart, on Muir Island. An Omega-Level mutant, David is capable of spontaneously and near-instantaneously developing new powers ranging from simple telekinesis to being able to manipulate the very fabric of reality itself. Because all of David’s powers are based on his vast psychic abilities, the majority of them have come with the grim side effect of being the source of a new persona. As such, Legion’s mind is home to thousands of alters, which have been the source of countless problems for him over the years.

The original Dark Phoenix Saga began in the pages of 1979’s X-Men #129 by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. The iconic storyline saw Jean Grey overcome by the raw power of the Phoenix Force and, more importantly, its destructive other known as the Dark Phoenix. Over the course of the Dark Phoenix Saga, readers watched on as Jean slipped further into outright villainy, drawing the attention of everyone from the X-Men to the Shi’ar Empire. In the end, Jean sacrificed her own life to quell the threat of the Phoenix, though that was hardly the end of their story together.

Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1 will be available June 11 from Marvel Comics.
