Astronaut proves you can play D&D in space after rolling D20 without gravity

A real astronaut has just found exactly how to roll a D20 in zero gravity, proving that you can actually play Dungeons and Dragons in space.

Rabea Rogge was the first German woman in space when she embarked on SpaceX’s Fram2 mission back in 2025. The flight sent the Crew Dragon Resilience shuttle into a polar orbit around the Earth and over the North and South Poles.

During the three-day mission, the crew carried out key research about the planet’s poles, but Rogge also found the time to make another crucial discovery — how to play D&D without gravity.

D&D in space is “absolutely possible”

You might think it’s impossible to play D&D, or any other dice-related game, in space, given that the D20 would just float off around the cabin. But just over a year after Fram2 ended, Rogge shared an Instagram post proving that not only is it possible, it’s actually really easy.

In the clip, during which she’s floating in zero gravity with the Earth off in the background, the astronaut said that she and the crew “experimented” and found the best way is to spin it, let go, and then catch it, before using the gap in her hand to reveal the number.

Although she only managed a seven instead of the Natural 20 she wanted, she still showed that “roleplaying in space is absolutely possible.”

“As a pen & paper nerd, I experimented with this 20-sided glass die (that caught the light beautifully) and found that the next round of D&D or similar in space is saved,” she added in the caption.

While this news might not exactly be a game-changer for the average player, it’s still nice to know that the Artemis II crew has the option of playing D&D to pass the time. When they’re not breaking a $30 million toilet, that is.
