Bakery’s horrifying prank backfires as customers won’t stop trying to order AI cake

Employees at a Michigan bakery were stunned when the horrific ‘cake’ they made for April Fool’s Day became so popular that people actually wanted to buy it.

On April 1, Homestead Kitchen posted a photo on Instagram showing off their special Easter cake: a horrific lamb-shaped confection that looked like something out of a bad taxidermy photobook.

“Order your lamb cake for Easter! Today is the last day to place orders,” the bakery wrote in the post’s caption. “Choose from chocolate, vanilla, wedding almond, or lemon.”

Thankfully, this terrifying treat wasn’t actually real. It was created using AI for April Fool’s Day… but customers liked it so much that they actually wanted to order it.

Initial reactions weren’t all positive, though. Speaking with SavorNation, Trina Staats says Homestead Bakery received a few “negative reactions” about the image, which she addressed the next day along with a photo of their real (and much more normal) Easter lamb cake.

“Most people knew right away that it was a joke, especially our followers,” Staats told the outlet. “They knew we take cake art very seriously and create high quality designs.”

That being said, the AI-generated monstrosity they initially posted on Instagram got such a laugh that an overwhelming number of customers genuinely asked to buy it.

“We had several orders placed and others were lucky to score one from the case. Some customers came to the store looking for them and were disappointed when we sold out,” she explained. “I had no idea it would become a viral sensation and was not prepared for the demand.”

Staats shared a photo of a real-life recreation of the terrifying lamb cake on Instagram to celebrate its surprising success, telling SavorNation that the bakery even received orders from overseas customers.

“What started as an April Fool’s joke, turned into an international sensation, with over 4 million views, a sell-out weekend, and endless laughs,” she wrote on Instagram. “We can’t thank you all enough for how this week unfolded. Y’all are weird and we love it!”

Staats confirmed that the lamb cake monstrosity will be returning next year, urging customers to “start planning now” before it sells out again.
