Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 8 update is finally live, and it comes with a surprising addition, as the modding toolkit can now edit levels to a limited degree, opening up all kinds of possibilities for the scene.

The official Baldur’s Gate 3 mods allow for all kinds of new content, including classes, subclasses, races, magic items, spells, and dice. One thing they cannot do is add dialogue, stages, or quests, preventing players from making custom campaigns. However, fans have worked out how to crack these tools, allowing them to make their own expansions.

After an eternity of waiting, Patch 8 is finally rolling out across all versions of Baldur’s Gate 3. The Patch 8 notes are now available on the official Larian Studios website, and they confirm that the modding toolkit can be used to alter existing levels, though there are still severe limitations to what they can do.

According to the patch notes, partial level editing is now part of Baldur’s Gate 3. This means it’s possible to create NPCs, swap characters with something else, and add items to existing parts of the game.

However, there are some limits to what can be done. Players cannot add dialogue between characters or alter permanent aspects of the map, such as buildings, scenery, or terrain. This expansion is more about adding to existing places rather than changing them.

Considering what’s already possible with the Baldur’s Gate 3 modding tools, this Patch 8 update should hopefully make it easier for players to tweak the game. There’s a lot of buzz about players wanting to create whole new areas and quests, expanding the world of Baldur’s Gate 3 beyond the small slice of the Forgotten Realms that they see in the game, but now it’s going to be even easier to change the familiar parts.
