Black Mirror has to be one of the most mind-bending series. With Netflix introducing us to a world where technology has taken over daily life, and it’s just dystopia that defines the series, we got an episode that was inspired by Star Trek but is even darker, USS Callister.
Reports erupted previously that the episode became so popular that its makers were actually planning have its spinoff hit the streamer. However, nothing has come to fruition since. Instead, we are headed into another season of Black Mirror.
Back when season seven was coming, creator Charlie Brooker hinted at a limited TV series of the episode, or at least have a feature-length film, per Deadline. However, with season seven, the creator instead came forth with another episode around the characters stuck in the pseudo USS Callister.
It went through various guises but in the end we made it feature length within the season. It took so long getting it together
For those unversed, the original USS Callister episode starred Cristin Milioti and Jesse Plemons in the two lead roles. In the second entry, we saw Milioti’s Nanette Cole, alongside Jimmi Simpson as Walton, Billy Magnussen playing the character of Karl Plowman, Milanka Brooks as the blue alien Elena, and Osy Ikhile portraying Nate.
Creator Charlie Brooker and His Big Plans About Black Mirror S8

Big updates have been revealed by Charlie Brooker for his anthology series. Talking to Deadline, Brooker mentioned Black Mirror will return for an eighth season.
I can confirm that Black Mirror will return, just in time for reality to catch up with it.
The creator stated. He further went on to add his brain is already working on it, in fact, “is whirring away.” Talking about his thought process behind the series, he expressed, “Well, what haven’t we done yet, and what tone am I looking for?”
Without giving many details on the next episodes in the science fiction thriller series, he simply compared it to a musical track that should come next in the album.
If Not Spinoff, Will We Get a USS Callister Trilogy

It is director Toby Haynes who brought along his talents to the fictional world of USS Callister, making it so eerie that people simply wish for more of the episode. Back in 2025, The Hollywood Reporter came up with an interview where he shed light on a trilogy of USS Callister.
Recalling how even he was all in to bring forth a spin-off series to the table, Haynes reflected on the Hollywood writer’s strikes and how it gave time to Jessica Rhoades—the season seven executive producer—to think about another USS Callister episode.
Calling the second entry of the episode in question a “single film” he went on to add,
One film is a sequel. It’s not a series, and it kind of elevates the whole thing into the perfect format for a sci-fi adventure. We could be making our own, I’d like to say, iconic sci-fi trilogy within the Black Mirror world. And what could be better?
Moving further with his thoughts on the trilogy, Haynes explained he would like to put in all his efforts.
