Despite his passing at the start of this year, Bob Weir often welcomed the idea of a thing coming to an end, as evidenced by his hippie-themed songs and music, which gave birth to an entire sub-genre of music.

Thus, in an interview with Rolling Stone, the music artist talked about the deaths of his bandmates in the past, talking about how he wanted them to live just a little longer. At the same time, Weir also claimed that if it was a life well-lived, death was just a closing statement to it, saying:

Every day, things change. I’ll say this: I look forward to dying. I tend to think of death as the last and best reward for a life well-lived. That’s it. I’ve still got a lot on my plate, and I won’t be ready to go for a while.

Thus, as his family claimed in the statement, these performances after his cancer diagnosis were a chance for him to live that life to the fullest and pass away doing what he loved the most.

The Grateful Dead was a band formed in San Francisco in 1965, and were the pioneers of psychedelic rock and jam-band culture of the 60s and 70s. Here, Bob Weir was the founding member, rhythm guitarist, and co-lead vocalist, acting as the central pillar to the band’s sound and longevity.

Their rise to fame came through their eclectic genre-blending music, which incorporated hints of rock, jazz, blues, and a touch of psychedelia, popular during the Hippie culture that was sweeping the United States at the time. At the same time, their tendency to improvise their concerts made every performance and venue feel different, adding to the uniqueness.

Some of their most iconic songs, like ‘Truckin’, ‘Casey Jones’, and ‘Sugar Magnolia’, among others, even made it to mainstream, and influenced a massive, devoted following known as Deadheads till 1995, when the band officially came to an end.
