  • Momoshiki’s Left and Right Palms Have a Rinnegan

Momoshiki Otsutsuki and his Rinnegan are deeply missed in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. He remains out of commission after the time skip, so fans are eager to see his long-awaited return in the Boruto manga anytime soon. And when he does, fans know he will be up to no good again, likely using the powers of Rinnegan against Boruto’s opponents and allies, no matter how limited it will be.

When Momoshiki first appeared in Konoha, the abilities of his Rinnegan left everyone, particularly Boruto, in complete shock. Unlike the other holders of the most exalted dojutsu, his Rinnegan has an unusual appearance, making it instantly recognizable. But with Momoshiki missing in action in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, fans are starting to think his Rinnegan might be the weakest among the known users in the franchise.

Boruto: Momoshiki's Rinnegan, Explained

It is said that a Rinnegan wielder can either become a godsend for creation or destruction, and clearly Momoshiki Otsutsuki chose the latter. When he debuted in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, along with his guardian Kinshiki Otsutsuki, he only had one thing in mind and that was to grow a God Tree and devour its chakra fruit, sucking the Earth dry. And once he’s done, he plans to move to another planet to repeat the process until he can become a godly being like Shibai Otsutsuki.

If we’re talking about monsters, then that makes the two of us—Momoshiki Otsutsuki to Naruto

Of course, that entire process is easier said than done despite Momoshiki’s immense strength. A significant part of his power comes from his Rinnegan, which are located in the palms of his hands. Unlike other known users, Momoshiki possesses a red-colored Rinnegan, a unique variation that instantly sets him apart from the usual, purple-colored wielders. Just by the color alone, anyone can immediately recognize the power it holds.

It is the first time fans have seen a red-colored Rinnegan, making Momoshiki’s Kekkei Genkai mysterious. And when it turned into a yellow or golden color, fans knew that his abilities would be more problematic to the heroes of the franchise.

Golden Transformation for Momoshiki’s Red Rinnegan

Momoshiki Otsutsuki’s red-colored Rinnegan transforms into a yellow or golden-like dojutsu shortly after he devoured Kinshiki Otsutsuki in the battle against the combined forces of Naruto, Sasuke, Boruto, and the other Kages. Without any hesitation, he munched on the sacrificial Otsutsuki, absorbing his guardian’s power to show Naruto and the others what it really means to pass on one’s strength in the Otsutsuki way.

Just like that, Momoshiki’s red Rinnegan turned yellow or golden in color, marking the moment of his ascension to a far more dangerous opponent. He clearly received a significant power upgrade, which allowed him to outmaneuver the five Kages in an instant. He truly became a completely different person, even physically, as he gained another Rinnegan on his forehead, granting him even greater power and control.

Boruto: Momoshiki's Rinnegan, Explained

Momoshiki Otsutsuki’s palm-embedded Rinnegan grants him immense powers superior to conventional shinobi abilities. In particular, his exalted dojutsu allows him to absorb all forms of ninjutsu, as shown in Boruto: Naruto the Movie and the anime, where he absorbs Shikamaru’s Shadow Possession Jutsu, as well as Boruto’s barrage of ninjutsu attacks.

In a way, it worked like the scientific ninja tool Boruto had during the Chunin Exam. Worse, Momoshiki’s Rinnegan could release the ninjutsu he absorbed in double or triple the force, making it more problematic and terrifying. This makes it nearly impossible to take him down with just conventional shinobi techniques. However, the downside is that he can’t absorb pure natural energy. During that same battle, Momoshiki also demonstrated he can create gigantic energy constructs just like the Golem he used against Naruto and Sasuke.

You should be honored. You will become part of the Otsutsuki legacy. The chakra you have will soon be mine, and with it, I will achieve godlike power. You won’t even be remembered. — Momoshiki Otsutsuki

Just like any other high-ranking Otsutsuki, Momoshiki can conveniently use space-time ninjutsu to travel across dimensions. He once dragged Naruto into another dimension to advance the Otsutsuki’s endless cycle of planetary consumption, but Sasuke and the rest of Naruto’s backup were able to find him with his Rinnegan.

For now, Momoshiki and his unusual Rinnegan remain relevant despite keeping a low profile. Its red and later yellow color makes it a standout among the rest. On top of that, Momoshiki’s Rinnegan also remains underexplored and underutilized given how quickly Naruto, Sasuke, and Boruto defeated Momoshiki early on. Hopefully, when Momoshiki returns in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, more unique abilities tied to his unusual Rinnegan will be revealed.
