Bosch star Titus Welliver has landed a new role in an upcoming crime drama series with another notable actor after Bosch: Legacy‘s cancelation. Bosch: Legacy season 3 marked the end of Welliver’s time leading a series as the titular detective, something he’d done throughout seven seasons of Bosch prior to the sequel series. While the universe of the show will continue in the upcoming Ballard spinoff, the actor will no longer be the lead character in the show. He’ll still appear in some capacity going forward, but his time as the face of the series is at an end.

Now, Deadline reports that Welliver will be leading a period crime drama series, The Westies, alongside J.K. Simmons. The series, co-created by Chris Brancato and Michael Panes, takes place in the 1980s, focusing on the Irish-American gang of the same name benefiting from the construction of the Jacob Javitz Convention Center. However, internal conflicts and ever-growing FBI snooping could spell danger for the gang members. Welliver portrays NYPD officer Glenn Keenan, who was raised by the Westies, while Simmons portrays the gang’s leader, Eamon Sweeney. The eight-episode series will air on MGM+, with filming beginning in July.

Brancato also serves as showrunner and executive producer on The Westies.

What Welliver's Role In The Westies Means For His Career

He's Continuing His Involvement In Crime Dramas

While Welliver’s time on the cast of Bosch: Legacy and Bosch were constants for his acting career, he’s offered his skills to other projects in between. This includes playing Special Agent Vietti in 2019’s Shaft, and guest starring as Elijah Reed in The Equalizer. The latter role was originally for a backdoor pilot before the flagship series was canceled. As for Simmons, his more recent roles include Ray King in The Accountant 2, as well as his continuing voice work as Omni-Man in Invincible. Both actors are seasoned enough that The Westies bringing them together makes for an intriguing combination.

The Westies seems like it will focus on generational ideals from a gangster perspective, as the conflict will be between younger and older members of the group. For Welliver, some elements might carry over from Bosch: Legacy season 3, which saw his title character in conflict with his daughter, Maddie (Madison Lintz), for some of his decisions. However, this seems to be on a wider scale for The Westies, something that will be the crux of the larger conflict as the gang mixes their criminal activities with new methods of earning large amounts of money.

Our Take On Welliver's New Role In The Westies

His Character Seems Like He'll Have Plenty Of Inner Conflict

Because Welliver’s Glenn is an NYPD detective with past connections to the gang, it seems like The Westies will have plenty of focus on his character’s inner conflict. Simmons’ role as their leader means the pair are probably going to butt heads throughout the series, even as a whole host of other problems pop up for the criminal organization. With the show filming next month, it probably won’t be long until more definitive news about the series arrives.
