Can you believe it has been 27 years since the first episode of Bruce Timm‘s Batman Beyond was released on January 10, 1999? Titled Rebirth, the two-part episode showed the original Batman, Bruce Wayne, retiring from the job and handing the torch over to a high-school student, Terrence McGinnis, or simply, Terry.
Terry continues to be mentored by Bruce as he faces off against criminals and supervillains, including the man responsible for his father’s murder.
Created by Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett, it has received a rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, establishing itself as one of DC’s most goated animated series, if not the most.

The show ran for three seasons before concluding with a direct-to-video feature film, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. While fans wished for its return despite the cancellation, all hope was lost when Timm and others began working on the Justice League series (via CBR).
Fans could find solace in the fact that Timm is game when it comes to reviving the series in the future. He stated during San Diego Comic-Con 2019 that if the show’s physical release “sells like crazy on Blu-ray and creates a giant buzz, that will make it more possible that it would happen. We would totally do it.” Fingers crossed!
Executives Were Not Impressed by Batman Beyond Initially

Imagine looking at Batman Beyond and not being impressed by it, only to later realize the gold mine you had in your hands. That’s exactly what happened with Timm and team showing the first two episodes of the animated series to two WB executives.
Back then, WB TV boss Jamie Kellner sat down in a meeting with Timm, Burnett, Dini, and the late Jean MacCurdy, demanding an animated series based on a teenage Batman.
Now, Timm knew that following through with this would mean destroying the canon set by Batman: The Animated Series, which is why he and his squad had to come up with a plan fast. Describing his feelings during the meeting, Timm stated (via IGN),
I’m not sure I can adequately describe [my feelings] at that moment. It was surreal, and disappointing, shocking, and dream-like. Like this can’t be happening. It was not the words I expected to hear, let’s just say that. We were in the middle of doing our second iteration of Batman, ‘The New Batman Adventures‘. We’d found our groove, we were digging the look of the show, we were digging the scripts and stuff, we were on fire. So to have the rug pulled out from under us, it was just like, ‘Oh God, seriously?’
The one thing Timm knew was that he wasn’t going to sacrifice the continuity for a new project. He didn’t want to throw everything that happened in BTAS and Superman: The Animated Series away.
He recalled. “So I said, ‘So if there was some way that we could come up with a teenage Batman show that was still in continuity, that’s still built off of the shows that we had already done, the only way really to do that is to go forward into the future and introduce a new character, a new Batman.’”
And that’s how Terry came into existence. Despite his earlier hesitance, Timm eventually realized, with the help of producer Glen Murakami, that they had something “cool” in their hands and they should give it a real try.
The show was made, but unfortunately, it did not impress the executives. Will Friedle admitted at NYCC 2019 (via Entertainment Weekly) that two executives stood up and walked out of the room after watching the first two episodes. Batman Beyond was supposed to be a project for the younger audience, and they felt that the final product wasn’t aimed at the desired demographic.
Bruce Timm Believes Batman Beyond Is Ready for Live-Action

While some things are better left untouched, a live-action Batman Beyond is something fans have been asking about for a long time now. Although the studio has made multiple attempts to bring the project to life, none have successfully moved forward.
As far as Timm is concerned, though, he is all in for the idea. Talking to Syfy Wire, the producer stated that he believes the content is “ready-made” for a live-action.
First, he expressed his gratitude for fans who continue to show the animated series so much love even after almost three decades. He said, “It’s obviously super gratifying that people are still such fans of that show, especially because it was almost 25 years ago now that we did that show.”
Discussing the possibility of a live-action adaptation, Timm said,
Could it work in live action? Sure. Of course, it could. I think it’s ready-made for it. I do think it would be a little on the higher end production-value-wise, because it would not be a cheap movie to make because it’s set in the future. But I there’s definitely some cinematic possibilities there, for sure.
It remains to be seen if WB agrees on turning the greatest ever DC animated series into a full-blown movie, but one thing’s for sure – the fans will be seated if it ever happens.
