  • Quick Answer: Marathon’s Rewards Passes do not expire, allowing players to purchase previous season passes and unlock cosmetic rewards at their own pace without fear of missing out.

Back in March, Bungie announced that Marathon’s battle passes wouldn’t expire and could be purchased at any time.

Look, Marathon is by no means my favorite shooter game. However, it definitely earned some respect when I heard that battle passes can be unlocked at any time with Silk, meaning I didn’t feel pressured to log in every day and complete a few runs just to gain access to it.

This left me wondering — why don’t more studios follow this approach? Because honestly, they should.

Dear Studios, Please Add Non-Expiring Battle Passes to Your Games

Traditionally, battle passes utilize FOMO to force players to log in daily or weekly. There are some free tiers that provide things like in-game currency or basic skins. However, all the good skins or rarer items are typically locked behind a paywall. If you purchase it, you’re forced to grind so that you can unlock all the tiers and make sure your money isn’t wasted.

As someone who can’t be trusted to log into a video game every day, I’ve only ever bought a battle pass for games I developed an obsession with. For example, I purchased the battle pass when I first got into Valorant — and then never again when I stopped logging in every day. There’s a lot of pressure when buying a battle pass, because the thought of wasting my hard-earned cash causes me major stress.

So when I heard Bungie is allowing players to unlock every battle pass even after its active period, I was impressed. It actually isn’t that hard to do then, huh? It felt like Bungie was respecting my schedule, allowing me to return after a month or two of not playing and providing an opportunity to continue where I left off. It made me want to play Marathon more, surprisingly enough.

Permanent passes remove the anxiety of having to grind and replace it with excitement to log on whenever you feel like it — on your own terms.

Bungie’s decision proves that other studios can do it too. As players, we shouldn’t settle for features that exploit our time, and we must rally for other live-service games to stop adding expiring battle passes.

A good title should draw you in, and a non-expiring battle pass should be the bare minimum.
