A former member of Beamdog has revealed plans for a canceled sequel to one of the best Dungeons & Dragons video games of all time. The game was shot down due to an inability to find a publisher despite Wizards of the Coast being on board.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the biggest video games of all time and it’s likely to spawn a ton of new Dungeons & Dragons games over the coming years. However, things weren’t always looking so good for the tabletop RPG in the video game world, as companies were reticent to use the license for years, opting to go for their own worlds and systems.
One of the best Dungeons & Dragons games ever made was Planescape: Torment, which was set in and around the city of Sigil: the connective tissue of the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse. Former Beamdog employee David Gaider has revealed that a sequel, named Planescape: Unraveled, was pitched, but was unable to enter production.
The Road to Summerfall — Part 3 I haven't talked a lot about the two years I spent at Beamdog (between 2016 and 2018) mainly because, well, ultimately nothing came of it. I worked on two projects, both of which ended up cancelled. Still, I think the time I spent there was ultimately worthwhile.— David Gaider (@davidgaider.bsky.social)2025-04-15T01:48:06.256Z
Planescape: Unraveled Could Have Revived The Setting Way Earlier
According to Gaider, Planescape: Unraveled would have starred Ravel Puzzlewell, a night hag who is a major villain in Planescape: Torment. The player would control one of three aspects of Ravel, as she solved the puzzle of her own existence.
Wizards of the Coast was on board with the project but was unwilling to fund it. Planescape: Unraveled was shipped around but couldn’t find a publisher, so it was scrapped. It’s a shame it happened so long ago, as it’s way more likely to get picked up nowadays, when fans are eager for more Dungeons & Dragons video games.
The story of Planescape: Torment did receive a sequel of sorts when the campaign setting returned to Dungeons & Dragons in 2023. In the Turn of Fortune’s Wheel campaign, characters like Morte appeared, proving that Planescape: Torment is canon to the tabletop RPG. The demise of Planescape: Unraveled is still tragic, and fans of the original can now only wonder at what could have been.
