Charlize Theron says Kill Bill star Uma Thurman should have won an Oscar for her work in Quentin Tarantino’s martial arts epic. Thurman played Beatrix «the Bride» Kiddo in the 2003 film.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Theron discussed the impact Thurman had on her own career at the time. «We knew each other kind of offhand, but I knew her from being a massive fan, just watching her work, and always wanted to do something with her,» she explained. «Because when I came into the action world, she was really, to me, like, the sensei. She was the OG.»
When asked if Thurman should have been awarded an Oscar for her work on Kill Bill, Theron responded with, «A hundred percent.» She went on to note that it’s usually only «men who get a lot of credit» for hardcore action movies. «What she did in that film was just so unbelievable,» Theron continued. «She’s just such a badass. So since I’ve been in action movies I’ve been like, ‘Who do I want to work with and do an action sequence with?’ It’s always been Uma Thurman. Always.»
Thurman made her debut as The Bride in
Quentin Tarantino’s 2003 hit, Kill Bill: Volume 1. The film introduced The Bride as an extremely lethal assassin and former member of the Deadly Viper squad led by the film’s eponymous Bill (David Carradine). After being turned on by her fellow Deadly Vipers and Bill, The Bride is left for dead, only to slip into a coma and begin a gruesome quest for revenge after waking up.
The Success of Kill Bill Led To A Sequel
The film featured an ensemble cast including Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah, Gordon Liu, Michael Madsen, Sonny Chiba, and Michael Parks, and was lauded by critics and audiences upon its release. Six months after the release of the first film, Kill Bill: Volume 2 arrived in theaters, bringing Thurman, Hannah, Madsen, Carradine, and Liu back for the final chapter in The Bride’s story.
Like the first film, Kill Bill: Volume 2 was met with a largely positive reception from both critics and audiences when it premiered in theaters in 2004, garnering nearly two dozen major industry award nominations. The film was also a major financial success, raking in over $152 million at the box office against a budget of only $30 million.
Both Kill Bill movies are available on various streaming platforms.
