One daring software engineer asked the age-old question: Can it run DOOM? The answer for ChatGPT is now yes, and it can run the classic shooter directly in its chat log.

For over three decades, DOOM has been the litmus test for budding innovators. From gut bacteria to human brain cells grown on microchips, one of the first real experiments with any new creation is obviously whether it can play id Software’s classic FPS.

Naturally, many have been curious as to how AI may enter the conversation. Two years ago, we saw an AI game engine generate DOOM in real-time thanks to a team of researchers at Google. Now, we’ve reached the next step.

The 1993 shooter is now entirely playable directly within AI chatbots. All you need is to enter the right commands, and you can be stomping through Hell without leaving the chat.

Software engineer Chris Nager made it all possible, as Engadget first reported. Rather than simply running a command that takes you to a third-party site or service, they figured out a way to have the game running right there in your chat log.

It can work across LLM clients like ChatGPT and Claude, and if executed right, can work by typing in just one lone command: “Play DOOM.”

In moments, DOOM appears right there in the chat window, with a message alerting you that it’s now ready to play without having to install anything or go anywhere else on the internet.

“It’s always fun to see DOOM ported to new surfaces,” Nager said in a blog detailing the creation process. “This project is proof that ChatGPT and Claude can run DOOM.”

Furthermore, the function even partially works when chatting with LLMs on mobile applications, so if you need a quick DOOM hit while out and about, you’ve now got another option.
