Each character possesses unique motives, yet they unite under an unwavering admiration for Miquella. However, the unfolding events in the game can shift loyalties, and as a player taking on the role of the Tarnished, your choices could greatly influence which allies—or adversaries—arrive during pivotal encounters.
Will they extend a hand to assist you or become your foes? In this guide, we will explore the crucial interactions with Miquella’s Followers and discuss the implications these encounters have for your journey at Enir-Ilim, along with the consequential rewards they offer.
Guide to Miquella’s Followers Quests: Allies and Enemies
In the early gameplay of Shadow of the Erdtree, your encounters with Miquella’s Followers—Ansbach, Moore, Leda, Freyja, Hornsent, Dryleaf Dane, and Thiollier—are of little consequence. It isn’t until the pivotal moment of Miquella’s Rune shattering in the Scadu Altus region (most likely after you delve into Castle Ensis) that these characters exhibit pronounced behavioral changes.
During the climactic battle at Enir-Ilim, it’s critical to note that Needle Knight Leda and Dryleaf Dane will invariably position themselves as enemies, regardless of your choices throughout the quests. The fates of Freyja, Ansbach, Moore, Thiollier, and Hornsent, however, do differ based on player decisions.
Understanding Redmane Freyja
Let’s delve into the quest involving Redmane Freyja. After your conversation with her at Belurat Tower Settlement, your journey will lead you to Shadow Keep’s Specimen Storehouse, where you’ll encounter Ansbach on the First Floor and Freyja on the Seventh Floor. Should you talk to Ansbach first, followed by Freyja and then back to Ansbach regarding Freyja’s issue, he will entrust you with Freyja’s Letter.
- Delivering the letter to Freyja: She will become an adversary at Enir-Ilim, and if defeated, you will acquire her armor set and Freyja’s Greatsword.
- If you choose not to deliver the letter: Freyja will not appear at Enir-Ilim.
Interacting with Hornsent
Moving on to Hornsent, your main interaction with him involves feeding him Scorpion Stew. However, if Leda decides to pursue him, you have the option to join Leda in an invasion against Hornsent (or the other way around) in Shadow Keep’s central plaza. Capably, this must be completed before entering Messmer’s arena.
- Invading with Leda against Hornsent: This action will prevent Hornsent from appearing at Enir-Ilim. You’ll secure his gear and a Falx weapon, and afterwards, you can talk to Leda to receive the Lacerating Crossed-Tree.
- Assisting Hornsent in the invasion: If you side with Hornsent, you will receive Leda’s Rune and her Ash of War: Swift Slash, though Leda will be your enemy at Enir-Ilim.
Should you forgo killing Hornsent or participating in the invasions, his presence at Enir-Ilim will still depend on your actions in Messmer’s arena. If you summon him and engage in a conversation before resting, he will invade you at the Ancient Ruins of Rauh—where you will be forced to defeat him, resulting in his absence at Enir-Ilim.
But if you avoid killing Hornsent and do not summon him, he might appear as an adversary at Enir-Ilim, which offers a chance to loot his items upon defeat.
Engaging with Sir Ansbach
Next comes Sir Ansbach, for whom you should seek out the Sacred Rite Scroll located within the Specimen Storehouse. Subsequently, after Leda’s history with Hornsent, she will also turn her attention to Ansbach. You will have the opportunity to summon signs for both characters on the First Floor of the Specimen Storehouse.
- If you choose to aid Leda in invading Ansbach: This will result in Ansbach’s death, leading to him not appearing at Enir-Ilim. Instead, you may summon a Sanguine Noble Nataan in his place. Additionally, you will acquire Ansbach’s gear and his Longbow.
- Supporting Ansbach in fending off Leda: This choice allows Ansbach to potentially ally with you at Enir-Ilim, especially if you hand him the Sacred Rite Scroll. You will also receive Ansbach’s Longbow and Leda’s Rune if the previous invasion did not occur.
Ansbach is notable for remaining a potential ally at Enir-Ilim, as long as specific conditions are met; if you don’t help him fend off Leda, he might either die or remain within the Storehouse and thus not appear to assist you later.
Exploring Moore’s Narrative
Subsequently, we have Moore, who is known for his obsession with collecting. After Miquella’s Rune shatters, you will have a dialogue choice with him, impacting outcomes:
- Telling him to “put it behind you”: Moore shall become an adversary at Enir-Ilim and will drop his gear and bell bearing upon his defeat.
- Telling him to “be sad forever”: This will cause Moore to disappear, preventing him from appearing as either an ally or enemy at Enir-Ilim.
If you opt for the latter, you can still locate his corpse later, allowing you to claim his gear just outside the Church of Crusade.
Finally, Meet Thiollier
Lastly, we discuss Thiollier, who presents his own extensive quest involving a journey to the Fissure at Cerulean Coast. Completion of this quest is critical; once you thoroughly exhaust his dialogue before igniting the sealing tree, he becomes available as a summonable ally at Enir-Ilim.
Importantly, you can have both Thiollier and Ansbach as allies simultaneously. Following the climactic battle at Enir-Ilim, they will also be available during the final boss confrontation. Collecting their gear afterward can be a rewarding endeavor.
To maximize your chances of success at Enir-Ilim, ensure you keep Ansbach alive, provide him with the Sacred Rite Scroll, and fully complete Thiollier’s quest prior to burning the sealing tree. Completing the essential quest steps with Moore and Freyja will see you combat against both Freyja and Moore, while neglecting their quests will lead to a confrontation solely with Leda and Dane.
Quest Guide for Miquella’s Followers: Rewards Overview
If you successfully navigate through the engagements with Hornsent and Ansbach properly—helping Hornsent in Shadow Keep and aiding Ansbach in the Specimen Storehouse—you should have all of Miquella’s Followers present during the Enir-Ilim battle. Upon overcoming them, the subsequent rewards can be collected:
Note: The gear belonging to both Thiollier and Ansbach can only be looted after defeating the final boss.
- Freyja’s Greatsword and armor set: You can also obtain the Golden Lion Shield if Freyja’s Letter is delivered to her.
- Leda’s Rune and armor set: If you do not engage in her invasion with Hornsent, you will miss Leda’s Ash of War: Swift Slash. Conversely, invading her ensures that you lose out on Lacerating Crossed-Tree and Retaliatory Crossed-Tree.
- Ansbach’s armor set, Obsidian Lamina, and Furious Blade of Ansbach: You will forfeit the Longbow and Retaliatory Crossed-Tree if you do not support Leda in her invasion. Another invasion with Hornsent will provide you with the Longbow but deny you his full set.
- Thiollier’s Hidden Needle and armor set: Ensure you complete Thiollier’s quest to be able to summon him as an ally.
- Moore’s bell bearing, Verdigris Greatshield, and armor set: Avoid the dialogue option telling him to ‘be sad forever’ or you’ll miss out!
- Dane’s Footwork and armor set: While you can locate Dryleaf Dane’s armor elsewhere in the DLC, Dane’s Footwork can exclusively be obtained following this encounter.
