A Massachusetts hockey team was saved from the clutches of defeat when the lights at their rink went out during overtime and prevented their opponents from scoring a winning goal.
The world of college sports is highly competitive, with intense rivalries meaning everything to the players, coaches, and fans.
Losing hurts, naturally, but for Connecticut, the nature of their latest defeat was a bitter pill to swallow indeed.
Hockey team robbed of winning moment by electrical issue
A game between UCONN (Connecticut) and UMASS (Massachusetts) over the weekend was poised at 3-3 and went to overtime.
But, just as UCONN broke away and bared down on goal, the lights in the Mullins Center started to flicker before going out completely and plunging the arena into darkness.
One of the WILDEST overtime moments you’ll ever see. 😱
As soon as UCONN (the away team) got the puck and were primed for a great scoring chance, the lights started flicking and eventually WENT OUT. 💡❌
UMASS went on to win in the shootout. 😵💫

When the lights came back on, UCONN had missed their fantastic opportunity to take the lead and there was nothing they could do about it.
The game resumed once the electrical issue was resolved, and to add insult to injury, UMASS emerged victorious after a shootout.
UCONN were on the brink of glory, but have now suffered another defeat this season. It’s safe to say none of them will have stung quite like this one, though.
It’s been a tough season for both teams
It’s been a bad weekend for electrical malfunctions at sporting arenas, with an air horn blaring out in the NBA game between the Pistons and the Cavs.
But, for both UCONN and UMASS, it’s been a bad season all around. The two teams are in the bottom half of the NCAA hockey rankings, and even winning this weekend has not helped Massachusetts climb beyond 20th place.

Off Campus fans have one major question after Prime Video show release window & Season 2 news

Is Netflix’s new hockey series with Michelle Monaghan based on a real tragedy?
They’ll both now be hoping to find some form in the Conference championships coming up and the regionals beyond that. UCONN will certainly be hoping this blackout is not an omen for what’s to come.
