Sony Santa Monica boss Cory Barlog has reassured fans that Kratos is still part of their plans after the reveal of God of War Laufey.

In a stacked PlayStation State of Play on June 2, which included looks at Insomniac’s Wolverine and Until Dawn 2, the show ended with 20 minutes of gameplay from God of War Laufey. This new spin-off picks up with Faye, Kratos’ wife, after her funeral at the start of the 2018 reboot.

The game follows her journey through the Everywhen, a sort of afterlife of the gods, where she comes into contact with figures from various mythologies.

While we do see Kratos a couple of times in the demo, it appears that he will be mostly sidelined to concentrate on Faye. Don’t worry, though; we haven’t seen the last of the gruff Spartan.

Cory Barlog says God of War isn’t done with Kratos

Following the reveal, an interview was posted on the PlayStation YouTube channel between Cory Barlog and Laufey Game Director Ariel Lawrence. Lawrence returned to the studio in 2021 to head up the project, but she admitted that she was “shocked” to learn it was a game about Faye.

“I think when I was coming back and talking to folks, I had just assumed it would be another Kratos game and that was who I would be telling stories about for the rest of my life,” she explained.

In response, Barlog confirmed that although he’s not the focus of this new game, he will still be getting his own games in the future.

“It’s exciting. Faye is, while it’s a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore, all these different characters in there,” he said. “But there’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history.”

Ariel Lawrence also doubled down, adding, “Oh for sure. We can’t not tell stories about the big guy.”

They didn’t elaborate further on whether or not more Kratos-centric games are coming soon or if they’re in the works.
