  • Who Would Write the Sequel to Demon Slayer?

The ing article contains major spoilers for Demon Slayer.

The Demon Slayer anime will soon begin adapting the Final Arc of the manga with the first movie in the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle trilogy, which will be out later this month in Japan. The manga ended a few years ago, in 2020, and the trilogy will certainly deliver top-notch animation.

As the end of the anime draws near, many fans wonder if a Demon Slayer sequel could happen. To answer this question, we first need to understand if there are any loose ends that could spawn a potential sequel story.

A Sequel Is Possible, But Complicated

First, it’s essential to note that it would be hard to write a sequel to Demon Slayer, especially a direct sequel involving any battles with demons. There could be some sort of extended epilogue or spin-off with a slice-of-life approach, showing how the remaining characters are doing. Additionally, there could be an action-packed sequel focusing on Tanjiro’s Demon Slayer Mark. It is said in the story that those who awaken this mark die before reaching the age of 25. At the end of the manga, he should be about 16–17 years old, meaning that he has less than 10 years left. This could trigger a sequel where Nezuko and the others try to learn more about the mark and find a way to let Tanjiro live longer.

In order to soothe the spirits of those it killed, and to make sure it claims no further victims, I will swing my blade down and lop off the head of any demon without mercy! But I will not belittle those who regret their actions and suffer over the things they did as demons. Because demons were once human. Because they were like me.

— Tanjiro Kamado

Another option is making a story that takes place decades or centuries after the original manga, such as a Demon Slayer story in contemporary Japan. Turning into a demon was the outcome of a medicine that Muzan took centuries prior to the manga in the hopes of achieving immortality. This is not the first story where a villain strives for immortality, as this is a fairly common but unattainable dream among real people. Thus, it is easy to make someone have some sort of access to Muzan’s medicine and create a better version of it with current technology, triggering the formation of a new Demon Slayer Corps.

Who Would Write the Sequel to Demon Slayer?

Demon Slayer fans would likely want a potential sequel to be written by the creator of the story, Koyoharu Gotoge. However, since the end of the story, Gotoge hasn’t written any new manga nor expressed much interest in continuing Demon Slayer. However, Gotoge did approve other authors to expand the franchise with novels and manga, such as Kimetsu no Yaiba: Stories of Water and Flame. Thus, for now, it seems that a potential sequel, whether a manga or an anime, would be written by another author and likely spark heated discussions among fans about whether the sequel is canon or not.

Does It Make Sense to Create a Demon Slayer Sequel?

From a business perspective, it would make sense to produce more Demon Slayer anime after the manga is fully adapted. However, many fans have argued online that they wouldn’t want to watch a sequel, and any original anime continuing the story would likely be seen as «milking» by lots of fans. Furthermore, if the sequel doesn’t feature the original characters, it would be much less attractive to fans.

So, while it might make sense to make a sequel, it would perhaps be better to either explore spin-offs like Stories of Water and Flame or explore characters from the original anime, like Yoriichi, to produce more Demon Slayer anime content after the trilogy ends. In any case, it will take a few years before the final movie is released, so the production team has a lot of time to analyze which are the best options at hand.

When Will Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Be Released?

The first movie in the Infinity Castle trilogy, titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Movie: Infinity Castle — Part 1: Akaza Returns, will be released in Japan on July 18, 2025. It will then hit international theaters starting in August, beginning with Asian releases. In the US and Canada, the movie will premiere on September 12.

As for the sequel movies, no release window has been revealed yet. However, rumors suggest that the production team will drop a new movie every two years, meaning that the second movie will be released in 2027, and the final movie will be out in 2029.

Demon Slayer is available to stream on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Netflix in the US.
