Pokemon Go has a Kanto problem and players are “sick” of dealing with it

The Pokemon Company

Pokemon Go players have voiced frustrations over the game’s overpopulation of species native to Kanto and signaled a desire for change.

The problem? Per a breakdown posted on Reddit by one user tired of seeing nothing but Gen 1 ‘mons, Niantic’s Biome update rolled out in Spring 2024 is to blame.

“The introduction of Biomes made it way harder to hunt specific Pokemon that you want to hunt,” registered the complaint.

Claiming that spawn pools currently consist of “50% event Pokemon and 50% Biome/Kanto Pokemon,” the thread’s author pointed to the rarity of XL Candy and specific species as casualties of how Biomes function.

“This leads to a situation where a player might be unmotivated to even participate in an event,” they continued, ultimately calling on Niantic to “heavily tweak the ratio between Event Pokemon and biome spawns.”

Sentiment carried over to the comments, with one stating “I just want more diversity within the Biome spawns. I’m sick of seeing the same dozen Kanto ‘mons all the time.”

“I’m sick of seeing Kanto Pokemon and Niantic must change it in the next season,” echoed another.

Others were simply “Confused about why we have so many Kanto spawns”, adding “I feel like a better variety of spawns across Generations would solve most of the problems and benefit both longtime and new players.”

Rather than remove the functionality of Biomes entirely, most were content with adjustments to spawn rates, even suggesting that a remedy could be provided in the form of “specialized incenses”.

It remains to be seen whether any changes to Pokemon Go’s Biome system will be introduced as a result of these complaints, but it’s not the only problem area.

August’s Adventure Week caught flak from fans for its lack of wild Fossil spawns and locking popular Pokedex entries behind Research, Raids, and Eggs, leading to accusations that the game had become “pay-to-play”.
