If you loved Baldur’s Gate 3 as much as we did, you’ll be eager to get your hands on Divinity, Larian Studios’ next RPG, even though it’s likely a couple of years off at least. But, thanks to a recent Larian AMA, we’re even more excited to play it, and it’s all thanks to arson.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game that lets you do virtually anything, and that includes setting fire to massive areas, or chaining fire spells to maximise existing attacks. See those bad guys flailing around in a pile of grease? Fling a fireball at them and they’ll be slippy and on fire. And, shortly after, very dead.
Then there’s the simple joy of pocketing explosive barrels, placing them around a soon-to-be battlefield, and igniting them, as in this magnificent spectacle. Let’s see Raphael or the goblin cultists dodge a massive, room-filling wall of flame!
Now, Larian’s Adam Smith, Divinity’s writing director, has delivered the wonderful news that the game will be even more firestorm-friendly than Baldur’s Gate 3. Speaking as part of a Reddit AMA, he remarked that “We figured out ways to burn things that we could never burn before. We’ll still give you something to put out the fires though, no worries.”
On the downside, there’s the distinct possibility that Divinity’s foes will be just as eager to watch the world burn. Our Baldur’s Gate 3 party expired several times because we were standing close to something flammable.
You can read the full Divinity AMA here, which contains a host of tidbits about the upcoming game, the latest in the Divinity series. Addressing his earlier comments on AI, Larian CEO Swen Vincke said that Larian would “..refrain from using genAI tools during concept art development.” However, he didn’t rule out the use of Larian-trained AI elsewhere in the game.
Larian also confirmed it’d be refining relationships, “…to ramp up player friendship and romance more subtly, so relationship building feels natural.” And if your virtual partner shares your love of burning anything and everything, so much the better.
