Tom Hiddleston has become a phenomenal name in Hollywood. Not only because he is the Loki of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also because he saved the multiverse in Season 2 of the Disney+ series named after his anti-hero character. However, tides seem to have changed their direction as fans are now calling him out for comments that include our beloved Spider-Man.

Making an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor from The Life of Chuck stated that the reasons he cannot disclose, Tom Holland is his favorite Spider-Man. While that already raised eyebrows, with a seemingly hint at his and Holland’s time sharing screen in the Avengers movies, his next words united many fans on social media.

No disrespect to Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield. We’re all kind of here because of Tobey Maguire in a way. That film was the beginning of where we are.

This heated up a debate online with fans exclaiming, “No don’t think so, i think Blade paved the way.”

Others also chimed in, saying,

A fan then explained how other superhero movies played a big role as well,

I like Hiddleston – but seriously?

While the fans have flooded the comments with their thoughts, let’s take a look at what exactly happened before the age of the MCU.

Blade: Redemption Superhero Movies Needed After Batman & Robin

"Don't think so": Marvel Fans in a Frenzy After Tom Hiddleston Picks His Favorite Spider-Man, Here’s Why 1

In 1998, Wesley Snipes took on the role of a vampire killer. Half man, half vampire himself, Blade instantly became an antihero loved by many. The film literally resurrected the whole superhero genre after the world noticed flops like Batman & Robin.

This movie also set a whole new standard of how superheroes can be adapted into day-to-day life. Before this entry, superhero movies were intentionally given a comic or let’s say a comedy touch. Not only that, but they were made in a way that set them apart from movies that had normal life in them.

The costumes and the story involved too much fantasy, lacking features that a typical person would connect with.

With costumes now looking more natural, having a leather vest and simple guns, Blade brought along vampires that everyone will love in all eras. It was packed with action, but in a way that seemed reasonable. Later, with its sequel coming, people were ready to bet their money on superhero movies.

Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Made Genre Popular

Soon came 2002, the year when young minds had developed understanding, and adults had already tasted Blade’s wrath. We were introduced to a calm but needed protector of New York, Spider-Man.

Tobey Maguire gave the superhero genre a whole new definition. It was the first time we fell in love with a superhero, wanting more of these flicks. The film series and Maguire’s characters need no explanation, looking at the grand welcome he received in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Both movies played a big role in bringing up the superhero genre. A reason why some of us won’t ever have superhero fatigue.
