Don’t throw away your old laptop — try these 5 projects instead

For years, I’ve had a shelf filled with old laptops. I developed a sentimental attachment to each of them and couldn’t muster the nerve to dispose of them. Although they still work, these old laptops no longer meet my current needs.

After much consideration, I stumbled upon an article that showed how a colleague repurposed old Androids, and it gave me the bright idea of repurposing my old laptops. It took a lot of research and thinking, but I was surprised by how useful some of them have become again. I’m only wondering why it took so long.

Turn your old laptop into a dedicated distraction-free writing machine

I’m a writer, and in more than you might expect, there’s a lot of multitasking and many processes that go into writing a feature piece. I have to spend hours researching, testing software, and experimenting. All this happens before actually putting pen to paper. So naturally, my primary laptop has gathered far more software and tools than I envisioned.

This left the computer great for almost everything, but too distracting when I just need to write. So, one of the first things I did was repurpose one of my old laptops into a device that simply refuses to multitask.

This laptop used to be slow, but I figured that if I installed a lightweight operating system and stripped it of all apps apart from my core writing software, it wouldn’t be as slow. Now, I have some of my most focused and productive writing sessions using my old computer.

Convert it into a low-power personal server you fully control

Self-host your files, backups, and tools without renting the cloud

For a while, I’ve been quietly experimenting with open-source software. But the real strength of open source is self-hosting your favorite tools. I can use my primary laptop as a server, but it wouldn’t be ideal. The continuous power drain would mean my primary device is constantly charging. It makes the device less mobile, and hosting services in the background would compete with active daily tasks for storage and memory.

So, another laptop ended up under my desk. Even though the lid is closed, it actively does the work that I once outsourced to cloud services.

The goal of repurposing this laptop wasn’t simply to save money, but to retain control of where my data lived and who had access to it.

Build a private VPN and network-wide ad blocker

Infrastructure you only appreciate once it’s in place

If privacy and security matter as much to you, having a dedicated computer that doubles as a VPN and network-wide ad blocker makes all the difference. This can be one of the best ways to get the most out of a low-spec or old computer.

I had put off this project for too long because I always assumed it was too complex. Ultimately, it turned out to be less technical than I expected. Using tools like Umbrel or CasaOS, the setup becomes similar to an App Store for your home server. I use PiVPN (for the VPN) and Pi-hole (for the ad blocker), and though these two were built for the Raspberry Pi, they run flawlessly on old computers.

With this setup, even when I travel or connect to new Wi-Fi, I feel safe because my traffic routes back home automatically through my dedicated VPN and ad blocker.

Turn an old computer into a permanent smart home command center

One screen that replaces a dozen tiny decisions every day

Have you ever considered a laptop that stays in the kitchen? Well, this could be your old computer converted into an IoT server. It sits there and shows you just what you need to see, live on one screen. It gives you control over lights, sensors, schedules, and alerts.

This is one of the best ways to reuse an old laptop because you aren’t tempted to browse the web or tinker with it. This computer is a fixture, just like your thermostat or wall clock.

When everything’s fine, you don’t think about the computer because it serves no other purpose. But when something’s off, you notice it instantly.

Create an ambient information display

A screen that informs without demanding your attention

I spend a chunk of my time checking notifications just to reassure myself that I’m not missing anything important. But it’s even worse: checking a simple calendar event on a phone can spiral into a rabbit hole. In seconds, you’re going through unread emails and social media alerts.

Repurposing an old laptop to capture notifications fixes this problem. You can configure it to display only slow-changing information, such as upcoming deadlines, timers, and weather. Ideally, you should mount the computer strategically where you always have access to the screen, or just keep it in the corner of your desk.

This way, it’s not actively notifying or distracting you, but just by raising your gaze, you see this screen in the background, acting like screens used to, before they became interruptive.
