The Tournament of Power broke new ground for tournaments in Dragon Ball. Rather than be composed of a series of one-on-one matches, it was a battle royal, where teamwork, strategy, and stamina mattered just as much as raw strength. The result of this format was the competition’s shocking upset ending, with Android 17 coming out on top as the last man standing.
80 warriors competed in Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power, but only the strongest made it to the very end. Outstanding as 17’s performance was, the last 10 competitors to be eliminated all earned praise for how well they fought. Among the final survivors were the Z-Fighters of Universe 7, the Pride Troopers of Universe 11, and the machine warriors of Universe 3.
10 Biarra Survived Longer Than Even Piccolo
A Random Universe 3 Fighter Proved Himself Among the Multiverse's Strongest Warriors
Biarra is nobody’s favorite Dragon Ball character. The Universe 3 robot has a forgettable design and no personality to speak of, and he doesn’t do anything memorable during the Tournament of Power. Yet somehow, he survived for most of the competition.
Biarra’s underdog run is ended when he’s eliminated from the Tournament of Power by Android 18. Despite his incredible defense, he was no match for Universe 7’s Androids. The anti-climactic note Biarra goes out on only makes the fact he outlasts Piccolo, Hit, and the Universe 6 Saiyans all the most laughable.
9 Android 18 Sacrificed Herself to Save Her Brother
Android 18 Enabled Android 17's Victory in the Tournament of Power
Team Universe 7 absolutely dominated the Tournament of Power, having won the entire event, eliminated more competitors than any other team, and brought 6 of their team members to the very end. Even then, while Android 18 goes down during Team Universe 7’s fight against Agnilasa, she does so with a purpose. Universe 7’s strongest woman isn’t eliminated by one of her rivals, but by herself.
With Agnilasa being as powerful as he is, he nearly eliminates Android 17 from the Tournament of Power. Knowing that 17 is stronger than her, 18 makes the choice to sacrifice herself to save her brother. Had she not done this, there’s no telling how much further she could have made it in the competition.
8 Agnilasa is the Most Powerful Warrior in Universe 3
Agnilasa is a Fusion of Paparoni and Three of His Machine Fighters
Team Universe 3 did shockingly well in the Tournament of Power, with half their membership outlasting everyone except the strongest members of Team Universe 7 and Team Universe 11. And, after being whittled down to their final fought fighters, they display their true strength, and fuse together. Together, Paparoni, Borareta, Pancea, & Koitsukai form Agnilasa.
Agnilasa proved himself to be a monster, and by far the strongest member of Team Universe 3. He fought Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Frieza, and Androids 17 and 18 at once, and managed to make Team Universe 7 struggle. Defeating Agnilasa required the Z-Fighters to launch a combined assault, spearheaded by 17, and for 18 to sacrifice herself.
7 Dyspo Pushed Gohan & Frieza to Their Limits
Gohan Had to Sacrifice Himself to Defeat Dyspo
Dyspo makes it as far as he does in the Tournament of Power through a combination of his own strength, and the power of his closest allies. He’s the fastest warrior in the multiverse and has plenty of power to back that up, being far superior to most of the other Pride Troopers. At the same time, Dyspo benefits from spending most of the competition standing next to his teammates, Jiren and Toppo.
Dyspo’s final battle in the Tournament of Power was against Gohan and Frieza. Had Dyspo been able to fight them individually, he almost certainly would have won both matches. But the cocky speedster could never have predicted that Gohan would be willing to eliminate himself, just to take him down with him.
6 Gohan Orders Frieza to Eliminate Both Himself & Dyspo From the Tournament of Power
Team Universe 7's Captain Exits the Tournament on His Own Terms
The Captain of Team Universe 7, Gohan had a fairly impressive Tournament of Power run. He defeated Universe 10’s strongest warrior, Obni, and the last-standing fighters from Universe 6, Saonel and Pilina. However, Gohan didn’t have what it took to lead his team to the very end.
As the battle between Team Universe 7 and Team Universe 11 began, Gohan teamed up with Frieza to combat Dyspo. Despite the duo’s best efforts, they couldn’t keep up with the Pride Trooper’s unmatched speed. Gohan was thus left with no choice but to grab Dyspo when he could, and order Frieza to eliminate them both.
5 Toppo Is No Match For Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta
Embracing the Power of a God of Destruction isn't Enough to Save Toppo
Toppo went into the Tournament of Power with an advantage that no one else had: having the potential to access the power of a God of Destruction. Although he doesn’t fight much throughout the event, there’s almost no one he couldn’t have defeated. By the end, though, Toppo was forced to face one of the only warriors he couldn’t beat: Vegeta.
After embracing his role as a God of Destruction candidate, Toppo appeared to be unstoppable. However, even though he was far stronger than him, he couldn’t eliminate Vegeta. With Vegeta able to withstand Toppo’s furious assault, he’s able to fire back, channeling all his power into the Final Explosion, and eliminate the God of Destruction candidate.
4 Vegeta is the First Member of Team Universe 7 to Fall Victim to Jiren
Vegeta Unlocks Super Saiyan Blue Evolution Before He's Eliminated
One of Dragon Ball Super’s main characters, it’s no surprise Vegeta makes it as far as he does. He scores more eliminations than nearly any other fighter in the Tournament of Power, and is able to punch above his weight, defeating Top. Unfortunately for Vegeta, he ends up doing what he does best: lose to the main antagonist so Goku can look cooler.
After already exhausting himself against Toppo, Vegeta throws everything he has at Jiren. During this battle, he even unlocks Super Saiyan Blue Evolution. However, Super Saiyan Blue Evolution Vegeta isn’t enough to keep him in the game as he’s promptly eliminated by Jiren.
3 Frieza Eliminates Himself to Take Down Jiren
Dragon Ball's Ultimate Villain Sacrifices Himself to Save the Universe
Frieza was revived solely to help Universe 7 win the Tournament of Power, and no one can say he didn’t do just that. He aids his team all throughout the competition, and winds up being one of the last men standing against Jiren. Despite how much he loathes the idea, Frieza fights side-by-side with Goku in the final battle against him.
With Android 17 backing them up, Frieza and Goku charge at Jiren together. Although Jiren has been brutalized and exhausted by this point, he’s still too strong for Team Universe 7 to beat cleanly. Frieza takes Jiren out with him, tackling the champion of Universe 11 off the Tournament of Power’s stage.
2 Goku Wasn't Strong Enough to Win the Tournament of Power Alone
Ultra Instinct Burns Goku Out Before He Can Defeat Jiren
The main focus of the Universe Survival Saga, Goku survives until the Tournament of Power’s very end. He nearly wins outright, with the power of Perfected Ultra Instinct giving him the strength he needs to defeat Jiren. But with his body unable to handle this new power for long, Goku is instead forced to lean on the aid of Frieza and Android 17.
During the Tournament of Power’s last battle, Goku can barely even turn Super Saiyan, let alone Ultra Instinct. Yet with the help of his archenemy, Goku’s able to defeat Jiren and save his universe. Alongside Frieza, Goku tackles Jiren into the ether, all of them being eliminated in the process – leaving Android 17 the last man standing, netting Universe 7 the win.
1 Jiren Falls to the Combined Strength of Universe 7
Goku, Frieza, Android 17, and Vegeta All Contribute to Jiren's Downfall
In any format other than a battle royal, Jiren would have won the Tournament of Power and easily at that. Up until Goku unlocked Perfected Ultra Instinct, there wasn’t a mortal in the multiverse with power anything like his. Yet in his prolonged battle against Goku, Frieza, Android 17, and Vegeta, Jiren loses.
Jiren’s downfall comes both as a result of his lack of trust and teamwork, as well as a result of the beatdown he receives from Perfcted Ultra Instinct Goku. Although Goku isn’t able to finish the job against him before he runs out of stamina, his assault leaves Jiren more vulnerable than he’s ever been before. This is what creates the opening for Goku and Frieza to fight him together, and eliminate Jiren alongside themselves.
