In the vast realm of The Lands Between, players encounter numerous characters, each with their own complex and often tragic narratives. One such character is Millicent in Elden Ring, whose journey intertwines with that of Sage Gowry. Both NPCs can be found in Caelid, and their quests are crucial if you wish to assist them.
Millicent’s quest might not be as extensive or challenging as some of the main story arcs, but it still features a few formidable bosses and includes some typical fetch quest elements. Notably, this quest will lead you to the Haligtree medallion area, a late-game zone accessible via the Grand Lift of Rold. Proceed with caution as spoilers will follow.
Initiating Millicent’s Quest in Elden Ring
To embark on Millicent’s quest, your first step is to interact with Sage Gowry. You can find him at Gowry’s Shack, located south of Sellia, Town of Sorcery, near a playful dinosaur-like creature that roams around Caelid. It’s important to avoid attacking this creature; if provoked, it could quickly eliminate Gowry, ending your quest line prematurely.
Upon speaking with Gowry, he will inform you about Millicent’s predicament but requests that you first retrieve the Unalloyed Gold Needle for her.
Locating the Unalloyed Gold Needle
According to Sage Gowry, the Unalloyed Gold Needle is in the possession of Commander O’Neil, who can be found within the swamps of Caelid. The dark areas on the map indicate where the swamps are located.
Commander O’Neil awaits to the right of the swamp. After defeating him, you will gain access to the Heart of Aeonia Site of Grace.
For those who prefer ranged combat, Commander O’Neil can be easily targeted from a nearby branch. At times, he may become stuck at the base of the branch, providing ample opportunities to deal melee damage. However, watch out for his summoned allies and eliminate them before concentrating on O’Neil to avoid being overwhelmed.
After you defeat Commander O’Neil, return to Sage Gowry. He will instruct you to deliver the Unalloyed Gold Needle to Millicent, located at the Church of Plague, northeast of Gowry’s Shack.
Once you reach Millicent, engage in conversation with her and exhaust her dialogue options. Present her with the Unalloyed Gold Needle, and after its use, she will fall silent. Rest at the nearby Site of Grace, then speak with her again to obtain the Prosthesis-Wearer Heirloom. After finishing her dialogue, head back to Gowry.
At Gowry’s Shack, you will find Millicent has appeared, but Gowry is absent. Talk to her, rest again at a nearby Grace, and Gowry will return to his shack while Millicent moves to a new location.
Acquiring Valkyrie’s Prosthesis
Your next objective will lead you to Millicent’s new location on the Altus Plateau. She can be found just north of the Erdtree Gazing Hill Site of Grace, which is located north of the Grand Lift of Dectus. However, you will not be able to progress her quest at this point.
Your task now is to recover Valkyrie’s Prosthesis from The Shaded Castle situated in the northern region of the Altus Plateau, east of Mt. Gelmir.
The castle is surrounded by a toxic swamp filled with aggressive zombie-like enemies. It’s wise to avoid prolonged engagement with these foes. Within the castle lies the Prosthesis, but it’s guarded by a Cleanrot Knight. You can either defeat them in combat or make a quick dash to grab the item.
With Valkyrie’s Prosthesis now in your inventory, return to Millicent’s location near the Erdtree-Gazing Hill Site of Grace. Talk to her, exhaust her dialogue, and hand over the prosthesis. She will express her gratitude and mention her newfound ability to wield a sword, prompting you to visit Windmill Village.
Tasks in Windmill Village for Millicent
Windmill Village in Elden Ring is easily identifiable due to its windmills and the dancing maidens, as depicted above.
First, activate the Site of Grace at Windmill Village, then make your way to the summit of the village to confront the Godskin Apostle boss. This encounter can be tricky, especially for those who find themselves dodging more often than not. Ranged attacks or magic can be effective strategies against him.
Upon his defeat, he will drop the Scouring Black Flame spell as well as the Godskin Peeler weapon. Be sure to activate the Windmill Heights Site of Grace and take a moment to rest. After resting, Millicent will be waiting for you near the Site of Grace.
Engage with her again, exhaust her dialogue, and she will express her thanks for the prosthesis while offering her assistance in future battles before moving on to her next destination.
Finding Millicent in Mountaintops of Giants
To encounter Millicent once more, you’ll need to venture further along in your journey, as she will now be located in the Mountaintop of Giants. This region can be accessed via the Grand Lift of Rold.
Millicent can be found at the Ancient Snow Valley Ruins Site of Grace. Once you speak with her, she will discuss Malenia and mention a medallion necessary for accessing Haligtree.
Retrieving these items will be essential if you aim to complete Millicent’s quest and access the Haligtree area. If you have encountered the Three Fingers and want to avoid the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending, securing the key item that reverses the ending is crucial.
After obtaining the medallion (or even before), return to Gowry’s Shack in Caelid and engage in all dialogue with him once more, learning more about Millicent and Sellia.
With this newfound information, let’s track down Millicent’s latest whereabouts.
Tracking Millicent in Haligtree
The Haligtree medallion will prove invaluable, as you must access this area to find Millicent again. Use the secret Haligtree medallion at the Grand Lift of Rold and proceed through the hidden path until you reach your first Site of Grace.
Your journey will lead you through the Consecrated Snowfield. From here, head north to acquire the area’s map fragment, but watch out for the large spectral foe that may attack you unexpectedly.
After collecting the map fragment, continue north towards the visible buildings ahead. Marked on the map fragment is where the buildings are located, specifically Ordina, Liturgical Town.
Approach from the back of the buildings and ascend the large staircase, where you will encounter a sealed door. Solving the Ordina, Liturgical Town puzzle will be necessary to unlock it.
Once the door seal is broken, take the teleporter atop the stairs leading to Miquella’s Haligtree. Activate the Site of Grace there and navigate downwards through the tree branches, ensuring to remain vigilant as various enemies lurk about.
Advance to the central platform with the Haligtree Town Plaza Site of Grace, identifiable from your prior grace point.
Proceed along the tops of buildings while jumping carefully to avoid any fatal falls. You will navigate past scarlet rot skeletons and enter a building, then exit to find a stone pavilion with multiple wooden bridges. Cross to the second bridge on your left to reach the boss area of Loretta, Royal Knight of Haligtree.
Additionally, the first bridge on your left contains a lift that facilitates easier travel to and from the Haligtree Town Site of Grace.
After defeating Loretta, you can claim the Haligtree Promenade Site of Grace. Continue downward by descending the large ladder until you reach the next Site of Grace known as the Prayer Room, where Millicent is waiting. Do be cautious of Crucible Rot Knight guarding the entrance.
Millicent will share significant information, but I won’t spoil it here. After this, she will guide you on your next steps.
Post-Meeting Actions in Haligtree
From this point, you’ll need to push ahead past the Prayer Room and continue straight ahead, entering the door guarded by the Erdtree Avatar. Thankfully, the route is relatively straightforward but filled with various adversaries. Once through, turn right to reach the Elphael, Inner Wall Site of Grace.
Your journey continues as you navigate over branches, ultimately arriving at a confrontation with an Ulcerated Tree Spirit submerged in a lake of scarlet rot. You need to approach the lake to trigger the Tree Spirit’s appearance.
This boss isn’t overly difficult; you can climb the branches from which you descended, and he may become immobilized, rendering his attacks ineffective. For a strategic fight, consider using ranged attacks and magic to exploit this position while evading the scarlet rot through the use of items like Flame, Cleanse Me incantation or Cleansing Boluses.
Upon vanquishing the tree spirit, rest at the nearby Site of Grace, and then return to where you battled the spirit, moving onto the ledge to the right.
Summon or Invade Millicent?
After your battle with the Tree Spirit, two summon signs will appear in the vicinity. The orange summon sign allows you to assist Millicent in defeating three invaders, while the red summon sign gives you the chance to invade and potentially defeat Millicent.
If You Help Millicent
By assisting Millicent, you will receive the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia talisman, which significantly enhances attack power with consecutive strikes.
After aiding her, rest at the Site of Grace, and Millicent will be found where the summon signs were previously located. Engage with her, rest one last time, and you’ll discover her lifeless body in that same vicinity.
It is now possible to retrieve the Unalloyed Gold Needle from her corpse, which is later required for obtaining Miquella’s Needle, a pivotal item for one of Elden Ring’s alternate endings.
To achieve this, you must defeat Malenia and return the Unalloyed Needle to the bloom that remains, allowing you to collect Miquella’s Needle.
If You Invade Millicent
If you choose to invade Millicent, you will acquire the Millicent’s Prosthesis talisman (which boosts dexterity and slightly increases attack power with consecutive strikes).
Should you defeat Millicent, a flower will replace her, and the retrieval of the needle will no longer be possible. If you’re aiming for the original or Ranni’s endings, this may not significantly impact your journey.
Nevertheless, I advocate for aiding Millicent, as the talisman you gain is more beneficial, and it keeps you eligible for acquiring Miquella’s Needle if you choose to pursue this path later.
After making your decision, it’s time to revisit Sage Gowry at his shack to conclude his quest line. Note that he may no longer serve as a merchant. If he remains alive, you can defeat him and loot his Bell Bearing, making his store available at the Roundtable Hold, along with the Flock’s Canvas Talisman.
