England has officially taken “custody” of Hatsune Miku after beating Norway at the 2026 World Cup, and fans are already pointing out one major issue with the Vocaloid star’s new home.
The bizarre meme first took off during Japan’s clash with Brazil, when fans joked that the winner would get to keep Hatsune Miku, the virtual singer and music software character developed by Crypton Future Media.
After Brazil beat Japan, fans declared that Brazilian Miku was canon. When Norway later eliminated Brazil, the internet passed her over again, sparking a wave of Viking-inspired Miku fan art.
Now, England has entered the custody battle after defeating Norway 2-1 in extra time to reach the World Cup semifinals. Jude Bellingham scored both of England’s goals, including the winner in extra time, after Andreas Schjelderup had given Norway the lead.

Fans declare Hatsune Miku belongs to England now
As soon as England’s win was confirmed, Hatsune Miku fans began treating the result as another transfer of power.
One viral post simply declared: “Miku now belongs to England. God save the Miku.” The attached fan art showed an England-themed Miku shouting at Norwegian Miku after the 2-1 result, complete with an “It’s coming home” chant in the background.

Another post said: “Officially, England owns Hatsune Miku from Norway,” alongside an edit of Harry Kane holding a Miku plushie with a St. George’s flag.
Others leaned into the chaos with British Miku designs, including one from artist Willy Arts that put her in knight-style armor. Another post joked: “The English have just colonized Hatsune Miku,” showing a person in a British redcoat standing next to a Miku flag.

However, the funniest part for longtime Vocaloid fans is that England’s victory has dragged an old Miku meme back into the spotlight.

For years, fans have joked that Hatsune Miku “does not talk to British people,” a line that comes from a viral fan-made Talkloid audio. That old meme has now collided with the World Cup custody joke, with one fan comic showing Miku reluctantly becoming British while repeating the line.

The timing also sets up the next transfer. Argentina beat Switzerland 3-1 after extra time to reach the semifinals, meaning England will face Argentina next.
Under the internet’s unofficial rules, Miku will belong to England until that match is played. If Argentina wins, fans will almost certainly declare that Miku has moved again, adding yet another country to the ongoing World Cup custody battle.
