Mexican environmental influencer and citizen journalist Alex Serna has been found dead after going missing for nearly two weeks, months after he said he had received threats over his reporting.

Serna, from Zihuatanejo in the state of Guerrero, disappeared on June 20, the same day he posted a video accusing a mango dehydration company of environmental violations in La Saladita.

According to reports, a body later identified as Serna was found inside a blue plastic drum near the Acapulco-Zihuatanejo federal highway, between the communities of Coyuquilla Norte and Arroyo Seco in Petatlán. The remains were reportedly taken to the Forensic Medical Service in Zihuatanejo and remained unidentified for several days before Serna’s relatives confirmed his identity.

The Human Rights Commission of the State of Guerrero confirmed Serna’s death and called on authorities to carry out a proper investigation into the killing. Local outlets reported that the body showed signs of torture, though officials have not publicly confirmed a cause of death or named any suspects.

Alex Serna reported threats before disappearing

Serna had built a following by posting about alleged environmental damage, land disputes, construction projects, and possible corruption in Guerrero’s Costa Grande region.

In the months before his disappearance, he publicly shared screenshots of threatening Facebook messages he claimed were linked to his reporting. The messages warned him to stop and claimed the sender already had his location and urged him to “back off.”

His final post on June 20 accused a foreign-owned mango dehydration company of operating without environmental permits and using water without authorization from Mexico’s National Water Commission. Serna also alleged the company had caused damage to soil and water sources.

The claims have not been confirmed by authorities, and Infobae reported that neither the company nor environmental officials had issued a public response to Serna’s allegations.

Serna’s death has sparked outrage among journalists, activists, and residents in Guerrero, with supporters calling for justice and demanding answers over his disappearance and killing.
