Eternals star Gemma Chan’s period drama with a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is about to make its Hulu debut. The Actor, in which Chan co-stars with Chan co-stars with American Horror Story‘s André Holland, will start streaming on Monday, June 30.

The Actor combines mystery and thriller elements within its story of a New York actor (played by Holland) who becomes stranded in a 1950s Ohio town with no memory of how he got there or his past life. The movie is based on iconic crime writer Donald E. Westlake’s novel Memory, which was written in 1963, but not published until 2010.

Duke Johnson adapted Memory into The Actor from a screenplay he co-wrote with Stephen Cooney. Speaking to Collider, Chan explained why she signed on for the movie. «I watched and really loved the stop-motion animation film [Johnson] did, Anomalisa. And then I read the script and spoke to him about how he was planning to shoot this, and he described bringing a lot of these practical techniques and methods to the filming of this, even though it was going to be live action.»

«The way the sets were going to be painted with force perspective, the transitions like walls being moved and lights going out, and then casting an ensemble of actors to play multiple roles, already sounded exciting and the opportunity to do something really different that we don’t get to do very much in filmmaking,» she continued. «It felt like an exciting opportunity.»

The adaptation of Westlake’s novel had been in the works for more than a decade. Johnson initially optioned the book in 2015, with Ryan Gosling attached to star in and produce The Actor. Gosling eventually had to depart the project due to scheduling conflicts. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was later linked to playing Paul before André Holland signed on.

Johnson ultimately attracted an impressive supporting cast to sign on for The Actor. The movie features three different actors who have also been involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chan starred as Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel and Sersi in Eternals. Toby Jones appeared in two Captain America films as Arnim Zola, and reprised the role in an episode of Agent Carter. May Calamawy, who starred in Moon Knight as Layla El-Faouly / Scarlet Scarab, also appears in the movie.

Next up for Chan is the thriller Josephine, in which she will star opposite Channing Tatum, according to IndieWire. Soft & Quiet filmmaker Beth de Araújo has written, directed and produced the story of an 8-year-old girl whose life is forever changed after witnessing a brutal attack in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

Holland recently shot filmmaker Alex Vlack’s directorial debut The Revisionist. GLOW’s Alison Brie, The Sandman star Tom Sturridge and Dustin Hoffman also appear in the psychological drama about an author whose real and literary words begin to blend together. No release date has been set.

The Actor starts streaming on Hulu on Monday, June 30, 2025.
