Bungie has revealed a number of stats from the Marathon Server Slam ahead of the full launch, and the trial’s maps had a very low success rate.
In a video shared on social media, the devs confirmed that even Perimeter, the first and easiest map in the game, had an exfil rate of just under 42%. So, even in the tutorial area, less than half of the players who dropped in made it out alive.
The numbers were even more punishing on Dire Marsh, the second map available during the test. Only 35.6% of Runners were able to successfully exfil, suggesting that nearly two-thirds of all runs ended in defeat.
They didn’t go as far as revealing what caused such a slim survival rate on each map, or whether it was rival players or the UESC enemies that caused the most pain.
Marathon has a brutal survival rate & there are harder maps to come
What’s most surprising about these numbers is that they are based on the two easiest maps that Marathon has to offer. There are two new maps, Outpost and Cyro Archive, that fans haven’t been able to try out yet.
Given that these are unlocked later on your journey, it’s likely that these will crank up the difficulty even further.

We’ve already had a good look at the third map, Outpost, which the devs have previously described as a “meatgrinder” that’s swarming with UESC and features tight corridors that force teams together. From this description alone, it doesn’t exactly sound like a walk in the park.
Then there’s the fourth map, Cryo Archive, that will arrive “once the community unlocks the way into orbit.” Little is known about this new zone, but it’s where a lot of the endgame loot will be found, so expect it to be well guarded.

Of course, we might see these numbers improve as players start to find their footing with Marathon, but don’t expect an easy ride once March 5 rolls around.
