Ben Affleck’s had a golden career in Hollywood, and a lot of the movies that he’s starred in are action thrillers. He is repeatedly drawn to action-packed stories that have some moral conflict or pressure-cooker-like situations. 

Sometimes his risks paid off as an actor, while other times they didn’t quite live up to the vision. But even with the misfires, Affleck never gave up and continued to deliver. So, let’s look at the highs and lows of Affleck’s screen journey in the action thriller genre. 

13 Reindeer Games (2000) 

Ben Affleck stars as Rudy Duncan in this crime-action thriller. His character is a recently paroled ex-con who only wants to start anew and pursue someone romantically. In the pursuit of this woman, he is forced into a heist due to his insider knowledge.

Affleck is likable as Rudy, but the plot and script were a little too weak for Reindeer Games to be ranked higher in the list.

12 Hypnotic (2023) 

Hypnotic features Affleck as Detective Danny Rourke, who’s haunted by the abduction of his daughter. There are psychics, sinister figures, and a lot of mystery in Hypnotic, but it doesn’t quite land. Critics found it underwhelming, but some thought the twists were fun, even though the execution was improper.

11 Justice League (2017) 

We all remember what a major disappointment Joss Whedon’s Justice League was! The DCEU heroes ally to save the world, but they couldn’t really save this film. Zack Snyder’s cut is considered a better version of the story, but Affleck was still convincing as Batman in this one.

10 Daredevil (2003) 

Ben Affleck has also been a Marvel hero once, portraying Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer who turns into a vigilante at night and fights crime in Hell’s Kitchen. Nothing compares to the show and Charlie Cox’s version of the character, and though Affleck tried, the story was dull and uneven. 

Daredevil (2003) is currently streaming on Disney+ (USA). 

9 The Accountant (2016) 

The Accountant is an accurate representation of someone who’s smart and also on the spectrum. Ben Affleck plays the titular accountant, Christian Wolff, delivering some great action scenes. The movie was overall received well by everyone despite a few complaints, but it did spawn a sequel, so at the end of the day, it’s a win for the actor!

8 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) 

Watching DC’s most iconic heroes go head-to-head, not just physically, but also in terms of their morals and beliefs, should have been an exhilarating experience to watch. However, Batman v Superman was a missed opportunity and barely scratched the surface of what could’ve been. Having said that, Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck delivered good performances and had great chemistry.

7 Triple Frontier (2019)

Triple Frontier is about five former U.S Army Delta Force operatives who reunite to steal $75 million in cash from a drug lord. Affleck plays Tom Davis and effortlessly portrays brotherhood and desperation as a retired veteran. Reviews for Triple Frontier were mixed, but it’s still a one-time-watch film.

6 Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) 

The director’s cut of the Justice League was released on HBO Max during the pandemic and had a runtime of four hours! Everything was better in this version, and the reception was a lot more positive than Joss Whedon’s theatrical cut. Though DCEU didn’t last, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is one of the best films it has to offer

5 Changing Lanes (2002)

Changing Lanes shows you how an ordinary morning can spiral into chaos! It all begins with a minor car accident between Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Affleck’s characters, but then they begin to sabotage each other’s lives in destructive ways, as both race to reach important court dates that could be life-changing. Overall, the movie is gripping, but some have found the ending to be a bit less satisfying.

4 The Accountant 2 (2025) 

Ben Affleck reprises his role as Christian Wolff in The Accountant 2 and teams up with his estranged brother, played by Jon Bernthal, to unravel a conspiracy. The chemistry between the leads is what adds depth to the story, so it’s not surprising that the duo impressed the viewers with all their intense action and martial arts-infused fighting styles.

3 The Last Duel (2021) 

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon star together in this epic directed by Ridley Scott. The Last Duel is based on a true story, and Affleck appears as a supporting character who’s arrogant and corrupt. The narrative unfolds in three chapters, and they all show us different perspectives of the same event after Marguerite accuses Le Gris of a heinous crime. 

The Last Duel (2021) is currently streaming on Hulu (USA). 

2 The Town (2010)

Affleck both directs and stars in The Town, and it follows his character Doug, a skilled bank robber, who’s leading a crew of friends to a heist, where things go wrong. The actor delivers a layered performance in the movie, which has been widely praised for its smart writing.

1 Argo (2012)

Argo is once again directed by Ben Affleck, who also stars in the movie as Tony Mendez, a CIA operative. The film is based on real-life events during the Iran hostage crisis, where Mendez hatches a brilliant plan to rescue a group of American diplomats. The movie was a major success and even won several Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing, so it’s certainly worth watching!
