Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was released in Feb. 2024, and it quickly became one of the most beloved JRPGs of the past decade. Complete with an enriching story, loveable characters, phenomenal gameplay, and a blissful soundtrack, the title is an amazing experience at every moment, and players have been thrilled by the Square Enix project since its release. The game features amazingly well-rounded gameplay that gives players a strategic awareness of the weapons and weapon upgrades they choose. Perhaps the most important strategic choice that players have throughout the game is the type of Materia they choose, as it can be the difference between victory and defeat.
Throughout Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, players can find 84 different types of Materia, each of them with a unique purpose. There are five different colors of Materia (Green, Blue, Yellow, Purple, and Red), and players need to choose which ones fit each different situation. Furthermore, the different Materia are also more efficient with specific characters, so players need to be aware of their party composition. Overall, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an amazingly strategic experience, and Materia provides players with many unique choices to make.
10 Assess Materia Helps Players Find Enemy Weaknesses
Materia Type: Command (Yellow)
Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has a variety of purposes, and some of them are significantly more flashy than others. While most players are focused on the spells that they cast and every swing of their swords, more strategy is required to defeat some of the game’s most difficult enemies. Players can decide to guess-and-check to find enemy weaknesses, but there is one particular useful Materia that fulfills this purpose far more efficiently.
The Assess Materia allows players to select an enemy and receive their bio and their weaknesses. Because of this, players can choose which party member to focus on the enemy with while having the other two party members play a more supplementary role. The Assess Materia is nowhere near as flashy as some of the other Materia in the game, but it can often be crucial to success.
9 Level Boost Materia Provides Amazing Utility
Materia Type: Support (Blue)
Leveling up Materia can often be a chore for players, as it takes hours for a single Materia if players do not have the correct resources. This often means that players will grind for hours on end to be able to take down a single difficult fight. However, there is one Materia that allows players to work around this restrictive chore, as the Level Boost Materia provides players with a phenomenal amount of utility.
When using the Level Boost Materia, the Materia in the slot next to it will be powered up. When used correctly, this means that two Materia can be boosted at once, which can work around having to level up the Materia to get the most powerful versions of spells. While it should not be used as the only way of gaining access to powerful spells, Level Boost Materia is an amazing addition to have in the early portions of the game.
8 ATB Boost Materia Allows For More Stylish Combos
Materia Type: Command (Yellow)
In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, special actions and spells are limited by an ATB meter that takes time to charge throughout a battle. This can often mean that players don’t have access to crucial spells at a particular time, making them unable to take down the enemy efficiently. However, one particular Materia can work around this restriction and give players more creative freedom in combat.
The ATB Boost Materia doubles the amount of ATB in the bar at any given time, allowing players to access spells and special attacks that cost more ATB to use. This means that players can use high-cost spells more easily and keep allies alive with the highest-level versions of defensive spells. The ATB Boost Materia is useful at all points in the game, making it one of the most versatile Materia.
7 Limit Siphon Materia Can Quickly Turn the Tide of Battle
Materia Type: Command (Yellow)
While players can control how much the Limit meter of the character they are using charges up, the Limit meter of their supplementary party members completely relies on their success in battle. Occasionally, a secondary party member will fill up their Limit meter, but their Limit ability will not be useful in that situation. During this time, the Limit Siphon Materia becomes one of the most versatile Materia in the game.
The Limit Siphon Materia allows players to absorb the Limit meter of one character and transfer it to another so that they can use a Limit move that fits the situation better. This is especially useful when the party healer has a full Limit bar, but players need their main damage dealer to use Limit. Overall, Limit is the most important tool at a player’s disposal, and being able to transfer the meter is an amazing form of utility.
6 Healing Materia is the Most Common Staple
Materia Type: Magic (Green)
Some spells are so common in JRPGs that a game does not function without them. This is especially true of healing spells, as they are the primary way of keeping a party alive in the face of a tough fight. The Healing Materia is the most commonly used Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and players often opt to equip it to every member of their party.
The Healing Materia becomes more important throughout the game because characters gain more total HP, and healing a larger portion of the HP bar becomes critical. Furthermore, health potions are far less efficient than the Cure spells, so Healing Materia is crucial to success. While other Materia might be more fun to use, Healing Materia is an integral part of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth‘s gameplay.
5 Time Materia Alters The Pace of a Fight
Materia Type: Magic (Green)
Throughout Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, fights are often chaotic, and it can occasionally be difficult to keep track of the action on the screen. However, skillful players can still weave between enemy attacks and dodge any attack that might come their way. This becomes significantly easier to do with the Time Materia, a powerful item that allows players to use three different time-related spells.
Haste speeds up a player’s movement, while Slow and Stop greatly hinder enemy movement. Through a combination of these spells, players can control the pace of a fight and adapt to every enemy attack without having to slow down their offense. While using this Materia does require some strategy, players are often able to work around this limitation through practice, making it one of the best Materia in the game.
4 Revival Materia Helps in the Worst Case Scenario
Materia Type: Magic (Green)
While most players will have healing spells equipped, Phoenix Down items are difficult to come by, meaning that if a character is knocked down, that can often be the end for them in battle. However, one Materia is even more powerful in a fight than the Healing Materia, as the Revival Materia has the same effect as a Phoenix Down, and it can bring an ally back to life.
The Revival Materia is often not needed in early game fights, as healing an ally is trivial, and the game is quite simple in the early chapters. However, in later game boss fights, having the ability to revive an ally is invaluable, and players will want to have the Revival Materia equipped to their main healer. Overall, the Revival Materia is crucial in late-game fights and should not be missed out on by players.
3 Steal Has Unique Utility in Specific Fights
Materia Type: Command (Yellow)
Some Materia is made to be used in very strategic scenarios, and players need to know when to equip it to thrive in battle. These Materia are not always useful, as using them at the wrong moment is not beneficial at all and can be a waste of an ATB point. However, when they are used effectively, they are amazing, which is why the Steal Materia is one of the best Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The Steal Materia is rather self-explanatory, as it steals items and weapons from the enemy that can later be used by the party. The most important use of the Steal Materia occurs at the end of the game, as players can use it against Reno to obtain the Magician’s Bracelet. While the Steal Materia has niche applications, it is still immensely powerful when utilized correctly.
2 All Summon Materia Have Time to Shine
Materia Type: Summon (Red)
Summons have always been a massive part of the Final Fantasy series, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth keeps this tradition with plenty of Summon Materia to choose from. These powerful Materia all have their own meter that needs to be used before they can be summoned, but once this occurs, players can unleash some of the most powerful attacks in their arsenal.
The most versatile part of Summon Materia is how they can be used to counter enemy weaknesses, as each Summon has an Elemental weakness that they can take care of in battle. Furthermore, these Summons are also amazing at building the stagger gauge so that players can land their most powerful attacks. Overall, Summon Materia are some of the most stylish options in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and they are a nice addition to every fight.
1 Enemy Skill Materia Allows For Intriguing Strategic Decisions
Materia Type: Command (Yellow)
Throughout Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, players encounter a plethora of formidable foes, each with some truly intimidating attacks and spells. While players can adapt in each of these fights and focus on dodging each attack carefully, there are far more stylish ways to turn the tide in battle. The Enemy Skill Materia is the most unique and arguably most powerful Materia in the game, as it allows players to utilize enemy abilities.
The Enemy Skill Materia can occasionally be slow, but its benefits far outweigh its drawbacks, as enemies occasionally have far more powerful attacks than players. Furthermore, these attacks are also not restricted by MP, as they are tied to ATB entirely. Overall, the Enemy Skill Materia is rather odd to use, but strategic use of enemy abilities can make boss fights far less difficult.
