Chelsea Debs

In a stunning turn of events, Filipe Luis has been sacked by Brazilian outfit Flamengo, despite winning a handful of trophies and securing an 8-0 victory just hours before leaving the club.

Clearly, there are very high standards in the Brazilian league, and Flamengo feel the pressure more than most as one of the most prestigious and revered clubs in South America.

However, losing your job after demolishing your opponents is a bizarre situation for Luis to find himself in, and it speaks volumes for the expectations on his shoulders.

Filipe Luis sacked by Flamengo despite huge win

On Monday night, Luis set up his team for a cup clash against Madureira. Flamengo already had a 3-0 lead going into the second leg, but managed to add another eight goals to that advantage to progress to the Carioca cup final.

However, a spotty start to the season that has seen Flamengo record one defeat, one draw, and one win from their opening three matches, twinned with recent failures in cup competitions, resulted in Luis being given his marching orders.

The timing of the decision is odd, to say the least. But, someone else will now step into Luis’ shoes to try and land another trophy for the Brazilian side.

The board were presumably disappointed with Flamengo’s defeats in other cup competitions. They lost to bitter rivals Corinthians in the Brazilian Super Cup at the start of February, and then lost out to Argentine outfit Lanus in the CONMEBOL Recopa final at the end of last month.

Trophies weren’t enough to save Luis

It is worth noting, though, that Filipe Luis had won a trophy on average once every 14 matches with Flamengo.

After taking over in September 2024, Luis guided Flamengo to the Brazilian title, the Brazilian Cup, the Challenger Cup, and even secured their first Copa Libertadores win in three years. However, seven trophies in 18 months just wasn’t good enough, it seems.

Luis turned out for Chelsea as a player, working under the legendary Jose Mourinho. He also had stints at Atletico Madrid, before hanging up his boots at Flamengo.

Notably, he managed to get a win over his former side during the Club World Cup last year, being the only team to beat Chelsea before they won the high-profile tournament. All that counts for nothing now, though.
