If there is one show that deserves credit for reviving hard sci-fi on Netflix, it is Game of Thrones creators’ 3 Body Problem.
Based on Liu Cixin’s award-winning book of the same name, 3 Body Problem stands out in Netflix’s catalog of modern sci-fi shows. There was a time when Netflix invested heavily in high-concept shows like Dark, Altered Carbon, The OA, and Sense8. However, in recent years, the streaming service has barely made major leaps in the genre and held back from taking risks.
3 Body Problem, however, is a rare exception that keeps the hard sci-fi ball moving for Netflix.
3 Body Problem Does Not Shy Away From Adopting Real Sci-Fi Concepts
As much as I have enjoyed watching shows like Stranger Things and Sweet Tooth on Netflix, my biggest gripe with them is that they play it a little too safe. This tendency even significantly harmed Stranger Things‘ finale, making it seem trite and predictable. 3 Body Problem is not (yet) as acclaimed as Stranger Things in terms of critical ratings, but it, at least, tries to bring something unique to the table.
It takes a bold swing at complex sci-fi with concepts and ideas like nuclear pulse propulsion, nanofibers, siphon supercomputers, and the titular three-body problem.
Although there are moments where even 3 Body Problem tries to simplify the relatively more complex stories of the book and gives them a more psychological interpretation, it never fully sandpapers its edges. Before its first season’s credits start rolling, viewers are left with many questions surrounding cosmic sociology, dimension unfolding, and the conflict between nihilism and existentialism.
3 Body Problem never spoon-feeds audiences with detailed explanations and exposition dumps. Instead, like most acclaimed hard sci-fi shows, it respects its viewers’ intelligence and does not dumb things down just to be more accessible.
Netflix Bet Big On 3 Body Problem, & It Is Paying Off

Netflix’s take on The Electric State was one of the most disappointing sci-fi adaptations of 2025. Instead of accurately portraying the technological nihilism and erosion of humanity portrayed in the original graphic novel, Netflix completely toned down its darker elements to make it more suitable for the masses. Thankfully, 3 Body Problem does tread the same path even though Netflix has invested a lot in it.
According to reports, the show’s season 1 had a budget of $160 million, making it one of the most expensive series on Netflix.

The show’s massive budget made it hard not to wonder if it would meet the same fate as many other ambitious sci-fi shows, like The OA, Travelers, and 1899, on Netflix and get canceled. However, it looks like Netflix’s investment paid off, given how 3 Body Problem has been renewed for two more seasons.
3 Body Problem Is Already Immune To Game of Thrones’ Issues
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss gave us one of the most iconic fantasy shows of all time. Unfortunately, Game of Thrones experienced a significant decline towards the end, which tainted its legacy. Many viewers might have noticed how Game of Thrones started going downhill when the showrunners ran out of source material content around the season 5 mark.
3 Body Problem is scheduled to land on Netflix in 2026.
Fortunately, 3 Body Problem allows them to leverage their strengths as its original book trilogy already has a complete, well-rounded story. This promises that, unlike Game of Thrones, Netflix‘s 3 Body Problem already has a clearly defined narrative roadmap and will not likely repeat the HBO show’s mistakes.
