Fans of the Activision Deadpool game are listing pre-owned copies online for absurdly high prices, with the most expensive one weighing in at almost $50,000. The sudden spike in value is due to the increased interest surrounding Deadpool after the recently released Marvel movie, Deadpool and Wolverine.
First released in 2013 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, the Deadpool game was made by High Moon Studios and Activision. Two years later, it received a remaster for the subsequent PS4 and Xbox One consoles. As is the case with licensed games and their limited lifespans, though, the Deadpool game was delisted and made unavailable for purchase in 2017. Since then, the only ways for interested buyers to acquire a copy have been through unsold stock and pre-owned listings. Unfortunately, those who want to snag a pre-owned copy of the Deadpool game right now should be prepared to contend with egregious prices.
Following the popularity and success of Deadpool and Wolverine, prices for physical PS4 copies of the Deadpool game have been spiraling out of control. In the span of just two weeks, the game's value has jumped from a maximum of $140 to a preposterous £38,374 ($49,004 USD). The ludicrously high price tag for a PS4 copy of the game was attached to an eBay UK listing which has since been removed, but justified its value as a test for "rich Deadpool fans who want to prove how much they love Deadpool" in the description. However, it's highly unlikely that even the most affluent of gamers could be coerced into spending that much on a pre-owned video game copy, which is possibly why the listing was wiped.
Deadpool Game Prices Are Seeing Huge Spikes in Value, But Likely Not for Long
Moreover, the Deadpool game wasn't enough of a critical success to warrant such lofty prices. Currently sitting at a median critic score of 62 on Metacritic, reviewers noted the abundant creativity and wit in the game's script, but felt unsatisfied with its supposedly dated hack and slash gameplay mechanics and level design. While the Deadpool game did play similarly to a lot of other superhero games of that era, the release of the Batman: Arkham series was a big shift for the genre, and therefore set a benchmark that the Deadpool game couldn't achieve critically.
Therefore, these recent price increases for the Deadpool game are most likely just drafting off the hype generated by the Marvel movie, and interested buyers should hold off until values have stabilized to a more reasonable point. It's difficult to say if Marvel Games has explored the prospect of a new Deadpool game, but now that the character is far more mainstream, it might just be the perfect time to start the process.
