Almost 50 years ago, Disneyland welcomed Space Mountain to Florida's Magic Kingdom Park, but at the end of the summer, Space Mountain will be d for refurbishments amid a spree of closures across Disney's parks. Few roller coasters have held the same status as Space Mountain and survived long enough to go down in Disneyland history. Space Mountain originally opened in 1975, four years after Magic Kingdom. Given its popularity, Space Mountain has migrated from Magic Kingdom to Disneyland in California, Disneyland Paris in France, and even Tokyo Disneyland in Japan.
Walt Disney conceived a space-themed roller coaster for Disneyland as a spiritual successor to the Matterhorn Bobsleds, based out of Anaheim, Florida, in 1959. Space Mountain has undergone several changes since then, as have many attractions in Disney parks. Space Mountain is located in Disneyland's Tomorrowland area, which is also home to Autopia, Astro Orbitor, Star Tours — The Adventures Continue, and the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters.
According to the Disneyland refurbishment calendar, Space Mountain and the Disneyland Railroad are currently scheduled to be d for refurbishment beginning August 5, 2024. Space Mountain will ahead of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, which will run from August 9 through August 11, 2024. From August 5 onward, the Disneyland calendar does not list any operating times for Space Mountain and does not dis when the roller coaster will reopen. It is unclear at this stage why these attractions are closing, but fans are suspecting it has something to do with D23's Tomorrowland announcement. Space Mountain's renovations are expected to be done by 2027, but this is merely an estimate until Disney announces something more concrete. In the meantime, visitors can enjoy new attractions such as the Disney Dreams That Soar drone show, which will be performed nightly from May 24 through September 2, 2024.
When Will Space Mountain For Renovations?
- Space Mountain will for refurbishment on August 5 and allegedly reopen sometime in 2027.
New rides at Disneyland this year include Tiana's Bayou Adventure, which opened in May to replace Splash Mountain, Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway, and Adventureland Treehouse. Disneyland also saw the grand reopening of Toontown and construction will begin on an expansion of the Haunted Mansion area. Plenty of progress has been made on DisneylandForward, a project that will mark the biggest expansion to Disneyland since Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney.
Disneyland can also expect an Avatar-themed experience, a new multiverse Avengers ride at Avengers Campus ahead of the hype surrounding Avengers 5, Seaworld San Diego, and a reimagined version of Camp Snoopy. Space Mountain is currently operating as normal through July, so this might be a visitor's last chance to ride the roller coaster as they remember it.
