Epic Moment from Pokemon Movie Recreated in Pokemon GO

Highlights

  • A Pokemon GO player recreates the iconic Mew vs. Mewtwo battle in augmented reality, sparking nostalgia for fans of the franchise.
  • The AR capabilities of Pokemon GO allow for creative reenactments of classic Pokemon movie scenes.
  • Despite minor discrepancies, the Pokemon GO player's recreation of an emotional battle scene garners praise from fans.

Using the AR graphics of Pokemon GO, one fan has recreated the epic confrontation between Mew and Mewtwo from the original Pokemon movie. Pokemon GO allows players to interact with Nintendo’s long line of collectible monsters in a real-world environment using augmented reality and a phone’s camera, though not everyone enjoys using it due to it potentially causing game lag or draining the battery on their mobile device.

Pokemon GO has been a major hit ever since it launched back in 2016, serving as a jumping-on point for newcomers to the large and sprawling Pokemon franchise. Said franchise stretches back to the late 1990s, when Pokemon Red and Blue was first released on the Nintendo Game Boy and took the world by storm. The surprise success of these first two Pokemon games eventually spawned the equally popular Pokemon animated series, which in turn produced a series of tie-in films. The very first one, titled Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back, hit theaters in 1998 and saw Mew and Mewtwo clash in animated form for the first time.

A Twitter user and content creator by the handle of cmillan1 recently used Pokemon GO’s AR capabilities to re-enact the battle between Mewtwo and its band of clones and Mew and the original Pokemon they were created from at the climax of the first Pokemon movie. The result is a 3D clash that sees Mew challenge an armored Mewtwo, the Pokemon Red and Blue starter trio of Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard battling their respective doppelgangers, and franchise mascot Pikachu trading electric blasts with its own clone.

Pokemon GO Player Reenacts Pokemon the Movie’s Clone Climax

As some Twitter users have playfully pointed out in the comment section of cmillan1’s post, this recreation isn’t an exact match for the scene in Pokemon the Movie. For starters, Mewtwo is shown battling Mew in the armored suit given to it by Team Rocket’s leader Giovanni — which was destroyed not too long after it was introduced at the very start of the film. The creator admitted as much and said that they do have footage of the regular Mewtwo, but decided to go with the armored version to better match the clones.

Still, cmillan1’s Pokemon GO reenactment of Pokemon the Movie’s emotional battle between clone and original Pokemon has gotten plenty of compliments from fellow fans who grew up with the film. The only parts that seem to be missing from the Pokemon GO iteration are the somber pop tune that plays during the movie’s version of the fight and Ash Ketchum’s temporary sacrifice that ultimately brings an end to the struggle and helps Mewtwo see the error of its ways.
