Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update Made the Game Worse on Steam Deck

Highlights

  • Fallout 4's next-gen update disappoints gamers by removing graphic options on Steam Deck.
  • Thankfully, there is a workaround for Steam Deck users.
  • Update woes extend beyond Steam Deck.

Bethesda’s next-gen update for Fallout 4 has made the experience of playing the game on Steam Deck worse, as it removed the option to change graphics. The next-gen update for Fallout 4 was eagerly expected by many gamers, but its release introduced new problems to multiple platforms.

The Fallout 4 next-gen update was released earlier this week. Not only did the update aim to fix several known bugs in Fallout 4, but it also promised to include Performance and Quality Modes for consoles, as well as the option to play on ultra-widescreen on PC. However, the overall reception of the new update is negative.

Now, some Fallout 4 players are complaining that the new update introduced a major issue on Steam Deck by no longer allowing gamers to access graphic options. This happened because the patch removed the Fallout 4 launcher, which is currently the only method for changing the visuals. To make matters even worse, the patch does not fix a known problem that gamers had with Steam Deck OLED. This version of the handheld has a 90hz screen instead of a 60hz one, and this causes an issue in which the game runs with around half of the normal FPS.

How to Bring Back Fallout 4 Steam Deck Launcher

  • By adding “SteamDeck=0 %command%” to Fallout 4’s launch options on the Steam Deck’s settings, it's possible to regain access to the launcher.

Fortunately, some gamers have already found a partial workaround to fix Fallout 4 on Steam Deck. By adding “SteamDeck=0 %command%” to Fallout 4’s launch options on the Steam Deck’s settings, it’s possible to regain access to the launch menu. Still, it's disappointing that, while Fallout 4’s update actually fixes some issues, it also created others.

Unfortunately, Steam Deck is not the only platform with problems introduced by Bethesda’s update. For instance, Fallout 4’s Quality Mode does not currently work on Xbox. Some PS Plus subscribers also struggled to gain access to the update, as they had issues when accessing the PS5 version of Bethesda’s game.

Fallout 4’s next-gen update also caused issues with Fallout 4 Script Extender, a popular mod that is used as the foundation of many other mods. The eagerly awaited Fallout: London mod was also delayed due to the updates, and it’s unknown when it’ll be available. Hopefully, Bethesda will correct most of these pressing issues soon, but the company does not have any official date for doing that yet, so fans will have to wait.
