Final Fantasy 14's new expansion, Dawntrail, introduced many new stories and characters to the player. As revealed by the final part of Endwalker's story, the Warrior of Light was invited to support the claim of Wuk Lamat to the throne of Tuliyollal. The journey takes some time to complete, and throughout the story, players visit beautiful places and learn more about the land and its inhabitants. This includes other competitors, like Koana — and even after finishing Dawntrail's Main Scenario Quests, players will soon discover they can find optional quests related to him.
That is the case with the quest "Once a Riddler, Now a Ruler". This isn't a very straightforward quest, however, as the objectives won't be marked on the map, which can make it a bit difficult to complete. There is nothing to worry about, though: here we will explain step by step all that you need to do to complete the quest in Final Fantasy 14.
How To Complete 'Once A Riddler, Now A Ruler' In FF14
The quest "Once a Riddler, Now a Ruler" is a level 90 quest, but it won't be immediately available to players. It's necessary to reach and complete the level 95 Main Scenario Quest "Road to the Golden City" first, as only then will the quest be available to be picked up.
Once that is done, you must speak to the Nostalgic Attendant (X: 15.3, Y: 6.3) in the Ek-wawya Plaza in Tuliyollal. The nearest aethernet shard to get there is Brightploom Post, as the character is a little to the south. The icon you need to look for is the plain golden sidequest marker, as this is not a quest to unlock new content.
When you speak to her, it will soon be made clear why the quest wasn't available before, as the attendant will mention developments of the main story up to this point. More specifically, the NPC will talk about Wuk Lamat and Koana's past as siblings, remembering fondly how they used to be and thinking about how this led them to where they are now.
She will recall a treasure hunt Koana once crafted for his sister, which Wuk Lamat never completed. It was left forgotten until she found the letter with the first riddle Koana created, which she entrusts to you, saying the treasure will still be out there if you wish to have some fun looking for it. The game itself will warn you that this quest doesn't work like most others, as your objectives won't be marked on the map and must instead be discovered through the riddles.
The letter given to you can be found as a Worn Envelope in the Key Items section of your inventory. You need to use it to read the first riddle, which says:
- "A great hall rests upon buried shells of old, where palm trees tower over sands gleaming gold."
You can use the item again as many times as you want to reread the clue.
The hall it refers to is the Xbalyav Ty'e tavern and the surrounding beach, the Gornitruq Gleamsands. You can easily get there through The For'ard Cabins aethernet point. Walking straight to the east of the aethernet point and heading towards the tavern you might be able to spot the objective if you look closely. It can be hard to see, though, so here is exactly what you have to look for:
The glowing marker will be at X: 11.7, Y: 14.5, to the west of the tavern, right beneath a palm tree, as shown above. The exact position on the map can be seen here:
Interacting with that will lead you to acquire the second riddle. Just like with the first one, use the same item in your inventory to read the next riddle:
- "Weathered planks creak, quietly guiding the way, to a verdant bed of green washed with sea spray."
This is even more straightforward, as it refers to the wooden walkways leading to The For'ard Cabins, which just so happen to be a little to the west of where you found the first clue. This time, it's pretty easy to find the next riddle, as you only need to go straight to the end of the platform.
The glowing marker will be at X: 10.2, Y: 21.9, in the middle of the plants. You won't see it when walking towards it from the beach, but it'll be on the other side, as shown above. The exact location can also be seen on the map:
Here you will receive the third and final riddle. Interact with the same item in your inventory to read:
- "A thoroughfare worn smooth speaks of journeys come to end — reason and resolve, set in stone, with duty contend."
While it might not be as clear as the previous clue, the "reason and resolve, set in stone" points clearly to where you should head: Morrow's Measure, where the stone pillars recounting the Tuliyollal Saga can be found.
The glowing marker will be at X: 10.8, Y: 13.2, among the plants behind the pillar depicting the Vows of Reason and Resolve. It can be hard to see, but look at the image above if you have trouble, or use the map below to guide you:
With that, you will uncover a ring — but it won't seem like something very valuable. To complete the quest, you must return to the attendant in the same spot at Ek-wawya Plaza where you started the quest (using the Brightploom Post aethernet shard will get you there faster). Talk to her to deliver the ring, and she will reminisce about the fake jewelry piece. The attendant will explain that she accompanied Koana when he went to the market to buy something for a treasure hunt that Wuk Lamat asked him to prepare for her, and that something ended up being the ring you found.
The attendant will tell you a little more about Koana and Wuk Lamat, emphasizing how much the new Vow of Reason loves his sister, and talking about how far they have come now that the siblings will rule Tuliyollal together. The attendant wonders how Koana would give the ring to Wuk Lamat now, and says she intends to return it to him when she has the chance.
After that, the attendant will thank you for the memories you unearthed alongside the treasure. Unfortunately for those aiming to unlock minions or other similarly interesting rewards, completing "Once a Riddler, Now a Ruler" won't give you anything more than a certain amount of gil and EXP. Still, it's a quest worth completing for those who want to hear more about the characters the new Final Fantasy 14 expansion introduced.
